Newmarket Racing Tips (Saturday 16 May 2026)
Seven races take place at Newmarket on Saturday afternoon. Andrew Mount’s selections line up in the 2.40pm and 5.10pm races, respectively.
2.50 Newmarket – Silver Ghost (1pt win – 7/1 Ladbrokes, Coral, BetVictor, 13/2 bet365)
Silver Ghost shaped well over course and distance in a Class 2 handicap on her return to action on May 1st, keeping on into a 7-1 third of six. Emma Lavelle’s four-year-old would have needed that run and has taken a big step forward on her second outing in each of her two previous seasons. In 2024 she finished a 50-1 tenth of 13 on her racecourse debut before running third at 66-1 on Newmarket’s July Course next time out. Last term, she was fresh/keen when sixth of nine at Newbury on her reappearance in April before landing handicaps over today’s course and distance and at Goodwood in May. Stall 2 might not be ideal, but I still want an involvement.
5.10 Newmarket – Wrydcroft (1pt win – 6/4 bet365)
Wrydcroft took his record in 7f handicaps to 1111 (4-4) when making all at Leicester last time, with the wins at 18-1, 6-1, 5-1 and 4-1. Connections of Pam Sly’s four-year-old, running off a handicap mark of 64 that day, could have expected more than a 4lb rise and is taken to make it five wins from his last six starts in this 7f apprentice “hands and hells” contest. The ground was quicker than ideal at Leicester and the son of Territories won’t be inconvenienced if there’s any rain around. Stall 7 of 8 looks useful and he’s tactically versatile.
Newbury Racing Tips (Saturday 16 May 2026)
It’s Lockinge Stakes day at Newbury on Saturday, but Andrew avoids the big race and has a brace of each-way picks later in the afternoon.
4.20 Newbury – Brosay (0.5pt e/w – 25/1 bet365)
Brosay wouldn’t be an obvious selection for this 6f handicap but Charlie Pike’s four-year-old took a step back in the right direction when a 28-1 three-length fifth of ten at Ascot last Saturday on what was his third start for his current handler. There was a strong draw bias on the straight course at Ascot that day, favouring high draws, and his stall 3 berth saw him race on the wrong side of the track. He disputed the lead that day and similar tactics could aid his cause today, as there’s not a huge amount of early pace on offer.
5.40 Newbury – Arbaawy (1pt e/w – 13/2 bet365)
Like Brosay (see Newbury 4.20 preview), Arbaawy was poorly drawn at Ascot last time out, emerging clear best of those drawn low when third in a 1m handicap (first four drawn 11, 12, 2 and 10). John Butler’s three-year-old also raced close to the early pace when it was helpful challenge late and his two and a quarter-length defeat was a fine effort in the circumstances. He remains an eight-race maiden but has made the frame in six of his seven started since running down the field when 125-1 for his racecourse debut and it will be disappointing if he isn’t on the premises.
Doncaster Racing Tips (Saturday 16 May 2026)
There’s a bumper eight races taking place at Doncaster on Saturday night. You have to wait until the final race on the card at 8.45pm for Andrew’s best bet for the action on Town Moor.
8.45 Doncaster – No Gain (1pt win – 7/1 bet365)
No Gain’s stride length (cadence) suggests that he needs a trip of at least 7f and she won over that trip in Jersey on her final start for Martin Dunne last year. Her three runs for Adam Kirby this year have all taken place in 6f handicaps, and she again found that trip on the short side when fifth (11-5 favourite) at Yarmouth last time where not helped by missing the break. She fared clear best of those to come from off the pace and Doncaster’s straight 7f looks right up her street.
