14:20 – £9 Racedays At Nottingham Novice Stakes (GBB Race)

Race Details: 1m | Class 4 | Going: 6.4) (outer track) (watered) (rail movements (Good (goingstick) | | flat

This looks a useful novice rather than a routine early-afternoon warm-up, with a couple of genuinely promising 3yos taking on some older horses who already look up against it. Adamlyi sets the standard on the figures after a solid second and he has the sort of profile William Haggas often improves sharply from first to second start. Runman is the obvious threat after winning both starts, though he gives weight away and is shorter on experience than on substance. Moreedd shaped with promise on debut and is the one at a bigger price who could easily step forward over this mile. Behind those, Atlas Mountain has a bit to prove despite a fair Topspeed figure, while the older brigade such as Revelio and Peace And Quiet don’t make much appeal in a race likely decided by upside.

Top Selections

1. Adamlyi – 10/11 with Betfair

Jockey: Tom Marquand | Trainer: William Haggas | Form: 5-2 | Rating: 83 | Topspeed: 74

Adamlyi is the percentage call. He is already the top-rated horse in the field on 83 and his second start reads much better than the bare form because he travelled like a horse learning on the job before finding only one too good. That is often the sweet spot for a Haggas novice, and Tom Marquand is exactly the rider you want on a colt expected to improve for a well-run mile. The market has latched on, but 10/11 still looks fair enough if you think there is another chunk of progress to come. He doesn’t need to be flashy here, just better than these, and he very likely is. Bet type: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Moreedd – 11/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Ray Dawson | Trainer: Roger Varian | Form: 4 | Rating: 65 | Topspeed: 48

Moreedd is the each-way angle in a race where the obvious pair dominate the betting. He finished fourth on debut and, while the official mark of 65 doesn’t scream star quality, Roger Varian’s 3yos can take a sizeable step forward from that first outing once they get the message. The fact connections pitch him straight into another novice over the same trip suggests they expect him to be competitive, and this field falls away quite quickly after the principals. At 11/2 with three places on offer, he makes more appeal than some of the exposed outsiders and looks the value if one of the front two underperforms. Bet type: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Keep it simple: Adamlyi is the win bet and looks hard to oppose if improving as expected from run two to run three. For an each-way punt, Moreedd appeals most at the prices in a race where plenty of the opposition look limited. Runman is the clear danger after going 2-2, but he may have to give best to a horse with the stronger upside profile.

14:50 – Family Fun Raceday Sunday 31st May Novice Stakes (GBB/GBBPlus Race)

Race Details: 1m 2f | Class 3 | Going: 6.4) (outer track) (watered) (rail movements (Good (goingstick) | | flat

This looks a useful novice on paper rather than a run-of-the-mill affair, with the market rightly centred on the 3yos. Bay Royale and Knights Charge both arrive after getting off the mark and set a solid standard on what we know, while Outflank has the best rating in the field and shaped like this step up to 1m2f would suit. The older pair Cloud Forest and Semele bring experience, but they also concede lumps of weight and that rarely makes life easy in a race like this. With Domenico Contarini a non-runner, the depth is a touch thinner than it first appeared, but there are still enough unexposed types to make this interesting. It feels less of a guessing game than some novices, though, and the younger improvers should dominate.

Top Selections

1. Bay Royale – 11/8 with Bet365

Jockey: Pierre-Louis Jamin | Trainer: Harry Eustace | Form: 4-1 | Rating: 78 | Topspeed: 42

Bay Royale makes plenty of appeal as the one most likely to keep progressing now sent up to this trip. He left his debut behind when winning last time, and that form line gives him a very solid platform in a novice lacking much depth behind the obvious contenders. An opening mark of 78 is fair rather than flashy, but he gets weight from the older horses and is drawn low, which should help around here if they do not go overly hard. At 11/8 he is no giveaway, but he looks the percentage call against rivals who still have a bit more to prove at the distance. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Outflank – 5/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Luke Catton | Trainer: John & Thady Gosden | Form: 3-3 | Rating: 82 | Topspeed: 65

Outflank is the each-way angle because his form is already respectable and there is a fair chance this longer trip draws out a bit more. He has been third on both starts, but those runs were not devoid of promise and his rating of 82 is the best on offer here. The Gosden yard is hardly in the habit of wasting bullets in races like this, and if he settles better over 1m2f he could easily threaten the two principals. The draw in 11 is not ideal, yet he is the one in the field whose price makes most appeal; available at 5/1, he looks the value if you want something against the short ones. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Bay Royale is the straightforward win play and the one I would want on side most. For an each-way punt, Outflank makes much more sense than taking cramped odds about the other market principals. Knights Charge is the obvious danger after his own maiden success, while Cloud Forest is respected on stable and jockey alone but has a lot of weight to give away on his belated debut.

15:20 – Dine In Sherwoods Restaurant Handicap

Race Details: 1m 2f | Class 6 | Going: 6.4) (outer track) (watered) (rail movements (Good (goingstick) | | flat

This looks a fairly ordinary 3yo handicap rather than a race packed with future winners, but it is still competitive enough with several lightly-raced types open to improvement now tackling 1m2f. Sports Day brings the most persuasive recent form after finishing second last time and is the obvious starting point, while Grindleton shaped well enough on his reappearance to think there’s more to come. Stepanov has bits of form that give him a squeak despite a wide draw, and Labiche also enters the reckoning after a better effort on his handicap debut. Plenty of these have shown only flashes, so this is not a race to get carried away in, but the unexposed runners should dominate and a sensible trip is likely to decide it.

Top Selections

1. Sports Day – 9/4 with Bet365

Jockey: Hector Crouch | Trainer: Michael Bell | Form: 597-32 | Rating: 73 | Topspeed: 68

He looks the solid one in a race where that counts for plenty. Sports Day has improved with racing this spring, first making the frame and then going one better in defeat when runner-up last time, and that Topspeed figure of 68 is the best on offer here. Michael Bell’s colt is drawn widest in 12, which is not ideal, but this is only a Class 6 and he has already shown enough to suggest his mark of 73 is manageable. Hector Crouch is the sort you want aboard a straightforward handicapper and, at 9/4, he is hard to oppose if building again on that latest effort. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Grindleton – 5/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Tom Marquand | Trainer: Daniel & Claire Kubler | Form: 643-4 | Rating: 71 | Topspeed: 62

Grindleton makes plenty of each-way appeal because he has been running to a level that should put him right in the mix without needing a wild leap forward. His fourth on return suggested he had trained on, and the Kubler yard often places these types well once they get a handicap mark. Tom Marquand catches the eye on a Nottingham card and stall 9 should give him options rather than forcing the issue. He lacks the obvious upside of a potentially well-treated improver, but in this company a repeat of his latest run might be enough to hit the frame and 5/1 is fair enough for an each-way punt. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Keep it straightforward: Sports Day is the win bet because he brings the best recent piece of form and sets the standard in a modest race. Grindleton is the each-way alternative in a 12-runner field with four places on offer, as he looks reliable enough to run his race. The main dangers are Stepanov, if overcoming the draw, and Labiche, who could improve again.

15:50 – Events And Hospitality At Nottingham Racecourse Handicap

Race Details: 1m | Class 4 | Going: 6.4) (outer track) (watered) (rail movements (Good (goingstick) | | flat

This looks a useful little 3yo mile handicap rather than a run-of-the-mill Class 4, with several of these bringing solid novice form into the equation. Capichera heads the market after a promising return, while North Force has done little wrong and arrives with the look of one who should keep paying his way. Rosa Inglesa is another with obvious appeal after a good comeback effort, and Domination is entitled to plenty of respect after getting off the mark last time. It is not an easy race to solve because there are a few lightly raced types open to improvement, but the shape of it suggests proven mile form and tactical position will matter. In a field of nine, there should be no hiding place.

Top Selections

1. North Force – 4/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Shane Gray | Trainer: Richard & Peter Fahey | Form: 32-32 | Rating: 89 | Topspeed: 71

North Force is the percentage call. He has been admirably straightforward in four starts, and those two runner-up efforts this season suggest his opening mark is workable rather than punitive. There is no flashy profile here, but there is substance: he has held his form, he stays a mile, and he looks the type to cope well with a race like this. From stall 9 he may need a sensible ride, but Shane Gray knows the job and Fahey’s horses often improve with racing at this stage of the year. At 4/1, he makes plenty of appeal as the solid option in a contest full of ifs and buts. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Chapter – 8/1 with Paddy Power

Jockey: Marco Ghiani | Trainer: Charles Hills | Form: 74713- | Rating: 87 | Topspeed: 84

Chapter is the one at the prices who makes plenty of each-way sense. His juvenile campaign ended on an upbeat note, winning before following up with a respectable third, and that Topspeed figure of 84 is the best in the field, which immediately catches the eye for a race of this nature. He has not been seen since last year, so fitness has to be taken on trust, but Charles Hills is more than capable of readying one after a break and Marco Ghiani is a positive booking. With several rivals priced on potential, Chapter at 8/1 looks the value angle if returning in the same mood. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

North Force is the win bet because he brings the most reliable recent handicap form and looks sure to give his running again. Chapter is the each-way punt at 8/1, especially with three places on offer, as his juvenile figures stack up well if he is straight enough first time back. Capichera and Rosa Inglesa are the obvious dangers in a race where the market principals all have cases.

16:20 – Conferences And Events At Nottingham Racecourse Fillies’ Handicap

Race Details: 1m | Class 5 | Going: 6.4) (outer track) (watered) (rail movements (Good (goingstick) | | flat

This is a typically trappy fillies’ handicap for the grade, with a handful of lightly raced 3yos taking on older mares who look more exposed. Ziata appeals as one of the more obvious improvers after shaping well on her return, while Stella Lucente and Jamie Sommers bring solid enough recent handicap form to the table. Wondrous Light arrives after a win and a respectable effort in defeat, and Pretty Spirited is another who could easily get involved from a handy weight. The draw may play its part over this mile, but more than anything this looks a race likely to be decided by which of the unexposed 3yos takes the next step. Not a deep race, but not an easy one either.

Top Selections

1. Ziata – 9/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Kieran Shoemark | Trainer: Ed Walker | Form: 43-2 | Rating: 74 | Topspeed: 58

Ziata makes plenty of appeal from stall 1 after a tidy seasonal return when runner-up, a run that suggested this opening mark is workable enough. She has only had three starts, so there should be more to come, and that matters in a Class 5 like this where several of these look a bit stuck in the assessor’s grip. Ed Walker’s filly gets in here with just 9st 4lb and looks the type to improve for stepping into handicaps over a mile. At 9/2 with Bet365, she is not exactly a hidden gem, but she still looks the one with the clearest upside. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Pretty Spirited – 10/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Alec Voikhansky | Trainer: Kevin Frost | Form: 4113-3 | Rating: 75 | Topspeed: 55

Pretty Spirited is the each-way angle at double-figure odds after returning with a solid third, which hinted she has come back in good order. Her form figures suggest a filly who generally runs her race, and in a 13-runner handicap that reliability has plenty of value. She is not thrown in off 75, but she is at least proven in this sort of company and carries only 9st. If this turns into a proper test from some way out, she looks the type who can keep on passing beaten horses and nick a place at the very least. The 10/1 with Bet365 makes her an obvious each-way punt.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Ziata is the win play because she looks the most likely improver and her latest second reads well in the context of this race. Pretty Spirited is the each-way alternative at a fair price in a field of 13 with four places on offer. The obvious dangers are Wondrous Light, who is in form, and Stella Lucente, who has been knocking on the door.

16:55 – £9 Racedays At Nottingham Racecourse Handicap

Race Details: 5f | Class 6 | Going: 6.4) (outer track) (watered) (rail movements (Good (goingstick) | | flat

This is a proper Class 6 sprint handicap: plenty with chances, very few you could trust with your mortgage. Irish Dancer arrives off a win and is entitled to plenty of respect despite a wide berth, while Sonic Si has been knocking on the door and looks one of the more solid options in a race full of patchy profiles. Masterclass is interesting on jockey booking alone with Oisin Murphy taking over, and Chasing Gold has old form that gives him a squeak if ready enough after an absence. Lower down the weights, Timebar and Nad Alshiba Snow are the sort to outrun their prices in a race where being well positioned early over 5f will matter plenty. Tricky puzzle is the honest verdict, but not impossible.

Top Selections

1. Sonic Si – 5/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Rossa Ryan | Trainer: Tony Carroll | Form: -74343 | Rating: 69 | Topspeed:

Sonic Si makes plenty of appeal in a race where a lot of these are either exposed or unreliable. His recent form figures suggest he is holding his level well, and the pair of thirds in his last two starts read well enough for a contest of this nature. He is operating from a workable mark of 69, and Tony Carroll’s sprinters are rarely short of racing fitness. Stall 11 is not ideal, but over a bare 5f that can matter less if Rossa Ryan gets him into a rhythm early. At 5/1, he looks a fair rather than flashy price, but he has the profile of the most likely winner.

Bet: WIN

2. Timebar – 14/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Lewis Edmunds | Trainer: Roy Bowring | Form: 55342- | Rating: 67 | Topspeed: 54

Timebar is the each-way angle at a price. He ended last season with a solid runner-up effort and, although absent since, he does not need to improve much to get involved from stall 1 if breaking on terms. His mark of 67 asks a question, but he has shown enough consistency in this grade to think he can be competitive, and that Topspeed figure of 54 is perfectly respectable in this company. In a 14-runner sprint with four places on offer, 14/1 looks the sort of price you should be interested in rather than scared of. He is not bombproof, but he is definitely an each-way punt.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Sonic Si is the win play because he brings the steadiest recent profile and does not have much to find in a weakish Class 6. Timebar is the each-way alternative from a handy low draw at rewarding odds. The obvious dangers are Irish Dancer, who comes here in winning form, and Masterclass, whose chance is boosted by the Oisin Murphy booking.
