Pontefract & Curragh Racing Tips - Steve Chambers' Lucky 15 Tips for Sunday 16th August

A bumper 11 races take place in front of the ITV Racing cameras on Sunday 16th August, as there’s competitive racing at Pontefract and the Curragh. Our tipster Steve Chambers focuses on the action at the two tracks, and picks out his four best bets to make up the Lucky 15 for the day.

Pontefract Tips (Sunday 16th August 2026)

Seven races make up the Sunday Series card at Pontefract, with the action kicking off at 3.45pm and ending at 6.45pm. Here’s our best bets for the Yorkshire fixture.

4.45 Pontefract – America Queen (1pt win – )

Second in the Nell Gwyn Stakes at Newmarket earlier in the season, America Queen has struggled to kick on from that Group 3 run, but a drop in class for the listed 4.45pm contest can see her blossom. Eighth in the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot, she was last seen finishing fourth in a York Group 3. Now dropping down to listed company the Richard Hughes-trained daughter of Havana Grey can dominate this event. Drawn nicely in stall 2, she should be able to maintain a prominent position from the outset and duly kick on in the closing stages.

5.45 Pontefract – Rocking Ends (1pt win – )

A dominant two-length winner off a mark of 85 at Newmarket two starts ago, Rocking Ends can strike again in the 5.45pm contest. Cieren Fallon was in the saddle that day and the pair will team up again for this event. Upped 6lbs for that Newmarket win, Rocking Ends failed to figure in a hot Ascot handicap in late July, where he was well beaten. However, this looks a little easier on paper and with Fallon taking the ride having missed the Ascot race, then everything is set fair for another strong challenge off that same of 91 here.

6.15 Pontefract – Letsbefrank (1pt win – )

Sir Mark Prescott’s Campeona and James Owen’s Sixty Plus are both going in search of a fourth win on the bounce in the 6.15pm contest. Progressive stayers, the pair certainly set the standard for this event, but could prove vulnerable against a former winner of this event. Jim Goldie’s Letsbefrank won this race back in 2024 and is only 2lbs higher in the handicap this time around. Despite having shone over two miles plus, he’s had success over a mile-and-a-half and it’s that pace that could get the better of Campeona and Sixty Plus, who often take plenty of time to get going.

Curragh Tips (Sunday 16th August 2026)

An eight race card takes place at the Curragh on Sunday, with the Group 3 Royal Whip Stakes the feature at 4.25pm. However, it’s the listed sprint at 4.55pm that is the race to watch, where it looks a competitive renewal.

4.55 Curragh – Grayrobin (1pt win – )

Plenty of the two-year-olds contesting the listed event at 4.55pm have struggled to get their heads in front so far on the track. Whilst they are sure to improve as their careers go on, it could be left open to prolific winner Grayrobin, who has already won two out of his three races. A winner at Cork last time out, he’s one that has shown excellent speed and beat one of Sunday’s rivals in Star Prospect in that Cork race. He will have to give weight away to some of his rivals here, but with confidence high he can duly land the hat-trick here.
