It’s a quiet day’s racing on Sunday 26th July, with only Pontefract and Uttoxeter providing the horse racing action. Steve Chambers takes a look at both cards and picks out his best bets to make up the GG Lucky 15 for Sunday.
Pontefract Tips (Sunday 26th July 2026)
Seven races take place at Pontefract, with a 2.30pm start. The Listed Pomfret Stakes is the feature race of the day at 4.00pm. Here are the best bets for the day at the Yorkshire track.
3.30 Pontefract – Coolree (1pt win – )
A Beverley specialist, Coolree will head to another Yorkshire track in Pontefract on Sunday at 3.30pm. Back-to-back wins at Beverley back in May saw the Sam England-trained seven-year-old record impressive wins. He struggled last time out when third of four in a muddling, small field affair at Beverley, but he’s one that could bounce back from that effort.He’s 5lbs higher than his last winning mark, so lines up off 69 here. However, he has finished second off 68, so he’s certainly not in the handicapper’s grip, and off top weight can land this prize.
4.00 Pontefract – Point Lynas (1pt win – 9/4)
Holloway Boy ran a stormer to finish second in the Group 2 Summer Mile at Ascot. If he can replicate that display then he should be too good for his rivals in the listed Pomfret Stakes at Pontefract at 4.00pm. However, he can often find it tough to get his head in front these days, so it’s worth looking elsewhere. Ed Bethell’s Point Lynas ran creditably when fourth in a handicap at York in May on his seasonal reappearance. Another who has struggled at times to win races, he showed when winning this race back in 2024 that he has the qualities to shine. If he’s at his best then he certainly has to be respected, and he’s fancied to upset Holloway Boy here.
5.00 Pontefract – Battenburg Belle (1pt win – )
Just over a month ago Battenburg Belle broke her maiden tag at Catterick over a trip just shy of six furlongs. She failed to follow up next time out when down the field at Beverley, but that came over seven furlongs. Now, the Rebecca Menzies-trained three-year-old will look to get back to winning ways and will drop back to six furlongs for the 5.00pm at Pontefract. She’s only 1lb higher than that last winning mark, so if everything can go her way then she’s more than capable of winning this pretty mediocre contest.
Uttoxeter Tips (Sunday 26th July 2026)
A bumper eight-race National Hunt card takes place at Uttoxeter on Sunday, with a 2.12pm start. We have a solitary pick to complete the Lucky 15 for the day.
4.42 Uttoxeter – Country Park (1pt win – )
Jonjo & AJ O’Neill’s Country Park finally got his first win at the 15th time of asking at Bangor last month and the Jackdaws Castle inmate can make it a quickfire double with a victory in the 4.42pm at Uttoxeter. A half-length that winner that day, he’s only been given a solitary 1lb rise for that success, so he’s surely primed to go close again. That confidence-boosting success could be what is needed to get him firing and whilst Dan Skelton will saddle some interesting contenders, it’s the O’Neill charge that can prevail.
