Moriarty Moon has hardly set the world alight in his three previous starts but there was money around for Michael Bell’s juvenile at Nottingham last time (11-4 joint-favourite) and, though trailing home sixth of nine that day, he looks a likely improver now gelded ahead of his handicap debut. His trainer is 26 from 91 with handicap debutants on the back of a gelding operation for a profit of £46.38 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected wins = 15.96, A/E = 1.63) and he doesn’t have to improve much on the clock to take a hand in this 6f Class 5 nursery.

8.40 Ripon – Zuffolo (1pt win – 9/2 bet365, 4/1 generally)
Short-priced favourite What A Tahoo scored comfortably over course and distance last month and returned to winning ways after her Musselburgh flop to make all at Beverley last time. However, runners from the Fahey yard are often worth opposing when they bid to follow up a turf handicap victory in another turf handicap, landing just 20 of their 190 starts since the beginning of 2021 (10.5% strike-rate) for a loss of £101.95 to a £1 level stake at SP. The three-year-old has already fallen down on this angle when fifth at Musselburgh (100-30) and I’d rather side with top weight Zuffolo, drawn next to the stands’ side rail in stall 6 of 6. Michael Dods six-year-old returned to form with a 22-1 third at Catterick last time, a run that was backed up by the clock, and horses of his age group do well in turf handicaps in Britain when carrying top weight, with those who ran in the same class/distance last time out landing 35 of their 161 starts (21.7%) since 2021 for a profit of £68.86 to a £1 level stake at SP.
