14:05 – Visit attheraces.com EBF Fillies’ Novice Stakes (GBB Race) (IRE Incentive Race)

Race Details: 6f | Class 4 | Going: 7.5) (watering) (rail movements (Good (goingstick) | | flat

This looks a compact but quite informative juvenile novice, with the market understandably gravitating towards K R Burke newcomer Etonnante. She could easily be smart, but taking short odds about an unraced filly around Ripon is not always the most comfortable position. Fern Clyde brings the best established form to the table after two starts and already has a rating of 78, which gives her a solid edge on what we have seen so far. Lady Branksome also shaped with promise on debut and is open to a fair bit of improvement, while Bladey Lady at least has racecourse experience in her favour. The rest need to step up markedly. It is not the deepest Class 4 novice you will see, but there is enough depth to make this more than a penalty kick for the favourite.

Top Selections

1. Fern Clyde – 7/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Duran Fentiman | Trainer: Tim Easterby | Form: 64 | Rating: 78 | Topspeed: 51

Fern Clyde is the one with the most persuasive substance. Two runs under her belt are a major asset in an early-season two-year-old novice, and that mark of 78 sets the standard among those with published figures. She was not knocked about when fourth last time and looks the type to come forward again now she knows her job. Easterby’s juveniles often improve for racing, and from stall 3 she should get a handy position around this sharp track. With the favourite priced up on reputation rather than evidence, Fern Clyde appeals as the more solid betting proposition at 7/2. Bet: WIN

2. Lady Branksome – 9/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Hector Crouch | Trainer: Michael Bell | Form: 5 | Rating: 67 | Topspeed:

Lady Branksome is the each-way angle in a race where a couple of the shorter ones are still trading on potential. Her debut fifth does not leap off the page, but it was a fair starting point and she shaped as though the experience would do her good. Michael Bell is not a man to overface his youngsters, so the fact she is turned out in this company suggests they think she has ability. Hector Crouch is a positive booking and, if she sharpens up as expected, she can easily get involved in the first two. At 9/2, she makes more appeal as an each-way punt than taking cramped odds about the favourite. Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Fern Clyde is the percentage call for the win bet because she brings the strongest form and a workable level of experience. Lady Branksome is the each-way play in a seven-runner field, with enough promise on debut to think she can improve into the places. Etonnante is the obvious danger on stable strength and market position, while Sovereign Beach is the interesting unknown if the Sangster yard has her ready first time.

14:35 – Book Now At ripon-races.co.uk Handicap

Race Details: 1m | Class 6 | Going: 7.5) (watering) (rail movements (Good (goingstick) | | flat

This is not much of a vintage Class 6, but it does look a workable race for a 3yo with a bit of recent substance, and Harswell River brings the clearest profile after a string of solid efforts in handicaps. He sets the standard on recent form and doesn’t have much lurking beneath him from a field full of in-and-outers and horses still trying to prove they stay competitive at this level. Hood Wink has at least shown he can win a race like this, while Regal Knight is the sort who could sneak into the frame if building on his latest effort. Others such as Wondrous and Crystal Aurora have questions to answer. It’s not a deep contest, but that doesn’t make it bombproof.

Top Selections

1. Harswell River – 5/2 with Sky Bet

Jockey: Oisin McSweeney | Trainer: Roger Fell | Form: -53723 | Rating: 64 | Topspeed: 56

He’s the percentage call. Harswell River has been running like a horse ready to collect one of these modest handicaps, finishing second and third on his last two starts, and his mark of 64 still looks fair rather than punitive. The Topspeed figure of 56 is the best in the field, which matters in a race lacking depth, and stall 2 should let McSweeney hold a handy position around this turning mile. Roger Fell’s runner doesn’t need to improve much to win; he just needs to repeat what he’s already been doing. At 5/2 he isn’t exactly hidden, but he’s still the one with the fewest holes. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Regal Knight – 8/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Tom Eaves | Trainer: Tony Coyle & Kaine Wood | Form: 078-45 | Rating: 58 | Topspeed: 47

Regal Knight makes more each-way appeal than most of these because he has at least started to edge back towards something respectable this spring. His last two runs, fourth and fifth, weren’t flashy, but they hinted that he’s finding his level now and this is hardly a fearsome Class 6. Off 58, he doesn’t have bundles in hand, but he does get in with just 128 and Tom Eaves is a positive booking for one likely to be delivered late. At 8/1, he looks a fair each-way punt in a race where plenty of his rivals arrive with shakier profiles or regressive recent efforts. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Keep it simple: Harswell River is the win play because his recent form is comfortably the most reliable in the field and this looks his chance to get off the mark in handicaps. Regal Knight is the each-way alternative at a bigger price, with enough recent encouragement to make the frame. Hood Wink is the obvious danger if bouncing back from his latest run.

15:07 – Sky Sports Racing Sky 415 Handicap

Race Details: 6f | Class 5 | Going: 7.5) (watering) (rail movements (Good (goingstick) | | flat

This looks a proper three-year-old sprint handicap rather than a weak nursery hangover, with a few of these arriving from different angles and plenty of them still open to a bit of improvement. Simba’s Pride sets the standard on official figures after a win and a second, while Solar Cooper comes here on the back of a breakthrough success and is drawn low enough to get a handy run. North West Gal has a solid profile despite a quiet return, and Black Missile is another with enough early form to think he can be involved. It is not an easy race to solve because several have bits and pieces of form, but it does feel like recent match fitness and who gets the cleaner trip over this sharp 6f will count for plenty.

Top Selections

1. Simba’s Pride

Jockey: Mark Winn | Trainer: Michael Dods | Form: 4-5712 | Rating: 80 | Topspeed: 68

He is the one I keep coming back to. The recent form figures are the best on offer in the race, and that latest second suggested he is still moving the right way rather than levelling out. An official mark of 80 asks a fair bit in this grade, but he has earned it, and the Topspeed figure of 68 says he has already run to a level that most of these are still trying to reach. Michael Dods knows the time of day with sprint handicappers and Mark Winn should be able to get him organised from stall 10. In a race full of possible types, he looks the most solid option.

Bet: WIN

2. North West Gal – 8/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Jason Hart | Trainer: John & Sean Quinn | Form: 3231-5 | Rating: 75 | Topspeed: 57

The market may just have cooled on her after that comeback fifth, but I would not be in a rush to dismiss her. She had been admirably consistent before that, signed off last season with a win, and the Quinn yard is more than capable of bringing these sprinters along with racing. Jason Hart is a notable booking around Ripon, where getting a filly into a good rhythm matters. Off 75, she does not look harshly treated, and there is every chance she strips fitter for that first run back. At 8/1 with Bet365, she makes plenty of appeal as the each-way alternative to the obvious one.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Simba’s Pride is the win play because he brings the strongest recent form and the best rating/Topspeed blend into the race. North West Gal is the each-way punt at 8/1, with her profile suggesting she can step forward from her reappearance. The obvious dangers are Solar Cooper, who arrives off a win, and Black Missile, who has enough substance in his form to be on the shortlist.

15:40 – Ripon Cathedral Handicap

Race Details: 1m 1f | Class 3 | Going: 7.5) (watering) (rail movements (Good (goingstick) | | flat

This is a proper Ripon handicap rather than a gimme, with a mix of class-droppers, exposed northern regulars and one or two who still look capable of better. El Matador sets the standard on recent form after back-to-back runner-up efforts and he arrives with the profile of one ready to strike, but he is not thrown in from stall 10 in a race where track position can matter. Garden Oasis, despite being an 11-year-old, keeps running his race and is dangerously well treated at the foot of the weights, while Financer and Spirit Of Acklam are interesting lurkers off light burdens. Parole D’Oro has the talent but carries plenty. Tricky enough, then, though not impossible to solve if you trust the recent form over reputation.

Top Selections

1. El Matador – 7/2 with William Hill

Jockey: Hector Crouch | Trainer: Ralph Beckett | Form: 075-22 | Rating: 102 | Topspeed: 83

El Matador looks the most solid option in the field. Those last two second-place finishes suggest he is knocking firmly on the door, and this mark of 102 still gives him every chance if he reproduces that level. Ralph Beckett’s horses are rarely sent on a long journey without purpose, and Hector Crouch is a positive booking for a horse who should be able to travel strongly at this trip. The widest draw is the obvious nuisance around Ripon, but if he gets into a decent rhythm early he has the class to overcome it. At 7/2, he is no giveaway, but he is still the one with the clearest win credentials.

Bet: WIN

2. Garden Oasis – 15/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Duran Fentiman | Trainer: Tim Easterby | Form: 9-7233 | Rating: 104 | Topspeed: 96

It is easy to dismiss an 11-year-old in a race like this, but Garden Oasis has been running far too well to ignore. His recent figures of 7233 show admirable consistency, and he is effectively very well positioned in this handicap carrying just 120 from stall 2, which could be a major asset at Ripon. He still retains plenty of dash on the Topspeed figure and knows how to race prominently without doing too much too soon. Tim Easterby has several in here, but this one makes obvious each-way appeal because he turns up and runs his race more often than not. Around 15/2 looks perfectly fair for an each-way punt.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

El Matador is the percentage call for the win bet given his recent runner-up efforts and the suspicion this is his opportunity. For an each-way alternative, Garden Oasis makes plenty of sense from a handy draw and a feather weight. The main dangers are Financer, who is well treated if bouncing back, and Spirit Of Acklam, who could outrun his price if ready after the break.

16:10 – Sky Sports Racing Virgin 519 Handicap

Race Details: 6f | Class 6 | Going: 7.5) (watering) (rail movements (Good (goingstick) | | flat

This looks a fairly ordinary Class 6 sprint in truth, but that does not mean it lacks shape. Jet Warrior arrives off the back of a deserved win and is very obviously the one they all have to beat, especially with his recent figures reading better than anything else in the line-up. The market has cottoned on, though, and he is no secret. Tickets gives Ben Haslam a second major player and has been holding his form well enough to think he can be involved again, while old boy Hurstwood is the sort to outrun his age if things fall right. Plenty of the rest have questions to answer, with Barmyblade, Night Emperor and Tarlac all needing a revival. Tricky enough if you are hunting value, but not a deep race.

Top Selections

1. Jet Warrior – 5/6 with Bet365

Jockey: Clifford Lee | Trainer: Ben Haslam | Form: 7-5831 | Rating: 71 | Topspeed: 58

He is short, but with good reason. That recent win was coming after a string of solid efforts, and his current mark of 71 does not look beyond him in a race where very few arrive with any momentum at all. Clifford Lee is a positive booking for a yard that could easily dominate this, and Jet Warrior’s figures are simply stronger than those of his rivals. Drawn 9, he may not get everything his own way, but over 6f here I would still rather be with the horse in form than try to get cute against him. At 5/6 he is no giveaway, but he is hard to oppose. End with the obvious answer.

Bet: WIN

2. Hurstwood – 11/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Ethan Tindall | Trainer: Peter Niven | Form: 167-94 | Rating: 68 | Topspeed: 55

The nine-year-old is not getting any younger, but this is the level where he can still make his presence felt and 11/2 makes more appeal than piling into the favourite at cramped odds. His latest fourth suggested he retains enough ability, and a mark of 68 leaves him within striking distance if he gets a strong pace to aim at. Ethan Tindall knows him well enough, and in a contest where several are badly out of sorts, Hurstwood stands out as one of the more reliable each-way options. He does not have Jet Warrior’s upside, but he has the profile of a horse who can easily nick a place.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Keep it simple here: Jet Warrior is the win bet and the one with the fewest questions to answer. For an each-way alternative, Hurstwood looks the sensible play in a weak race where plenty arrive out of form. The main danger is probably stablemate Tickets, who is consistent enough to get involved if the favourite underperforms.

16:45 – Napoleons Casino And Restaurant Leeds Handicap

Race Details: 1m 4f | Class 5 | Going: 7.5) (watering) (rail movements (Good (goingstick) | | flat

A five-runner handicap, but it is not a race lacking in angles. Spartan Times heads the market after a productive 2025 campaign and he looks the solid one, while Sir Edward Lear brings the best Topspeed figure and should come on for his reappearance fifth. Something is another with a fair chance on ratings and arrives in better nick than his bare record might suggest, whereas So Alex has to bounce back from a below-par finish to last season. Polygram is not entirely dismissed in a race this small, but his recent form leaves him with a bit to find. Tactically, this may come down to who gets the run of things in a steadily-run contest, so track position and timing could easily prove decisive.

Top Selections

1. Spartan Times – 11/4 with William Hill

Jockey: William Pyle | Trainer: Jennie Candlish | Form: 14313- | Rating: 86 | Topspeed: 70

Spartan Times makes plenty of appeal in a race where there are cases to be made for most of them but not many with his blend of consistency and scope at the trip. His 14313- sequence tells its own story, and he signed off last year in good heart, shaping like a horse who can keep progressing in staying handicaps. He is not burdened by top weight despite matching So Alex on 133lb, and Jennie Candlish’s runner looks the type to be well suited by a small field where William Pyle can ride positively if needed. At 11/4, he is hardly a hidden gem, but he still looks the percentage call in a trappy little heat.

Bet: WIN

Betting Strategy

In a five-runner race, this is a straight win-only play and Spartan Times is the one to keep on side. He brings the most persuasive recent profile and looks the safest option if this turns tactical. Sir Edward Lear is the obvious danger if stepping forward from his return, while Something is respected on ratings, but the recommendation is simple: back Spartan Times to win.

17:20 – Download The Raceday Ready App Handicap

Race Details: 5f | Class 5 | Going: 7.5) (watering) (rail movements (Good (goingstick) | | flat

This looks a proper Ripon sprint handicap rather than a gimme. Herakles arrives off the back of a deserved win and is the obvious starting point, while Canaria Queen comes here in equally solid nick after winning two of her last three. Dc Cogent is one of the more reliable types in the line-up and the inside draw could be a real asset over this sharp 5f, while Tees Aggregates has the highest mark in the field and is not without hope if things fall right. Our Absent Friends has enough recent form to enter the reckoning too, but stall 8 is no gift around here. In truth, this is competitive for the grade, with pace, draw and the ability to handle Ripon’s sharp test likely to decide it.

Top Selections

1. Herakles – 5/2 with William Hill

Jockey: Mark Winn | Trainer: Paul Midgley | Form: 4-4421 | Rating: 80 | Topspeed: 72

He is hard to oppose. That recent form figures line says plenty: Herakles had been knocking on the door before getting his head back in front last time, and he does not look like a horse flattered by one good day. Midgley’s sprinters are always worth respecting in races of this type and this one still looks fairly treated despite the follow-up bid. Draw 4 is fine, his Topspeed figure is right up there with the better ones in the field, and he comes here in the sort of form that often counts for plenty in these tight handicaps. At 5/2 he is not a giveaway, but he still makes most appeal.

Bet: WIN

2. Dc Cogent – 6/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Paul Mulrennan | Trainer: Bryan Smart | Form: 364436 | Rating: 84 | Topspeed: 72

Dc Cogent is the one that appeals as the each-way play because he keeps running to a similar level and is better than a bare sixth might suggest on paper. He has been holding his form in stronger-looking races than this and the combination of a low draw in stall 1 and Paul Mulrennan around Ripon catches the eye. He is not especially well ahead of the handicapper, but he is solid, handles this sort of test and has the pace to hold a position early, which is often half the battle here. At 6/1, he looks the value alternative to the favourite for those wanting an each-way punt.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Herakles is the win bet after finally cashing in on a consistent run of efforts and he looks the most straightforward option in the race. For an each-way angle, Dc Cogent makes plenty of sense from stall 1 in an eight-runner sprint. Canaria Queen is the obvious danger if repeating her latest win, while Tees Aggregates is another with enough class to get involved.
