16:43 – Garvey’s Bar, Ballintubber Maiden Hurdle

Race Details: 2m | | Going: YIELDING TO SOFT, Soft in places on Chase course | | jumps

This looks a fairly informative 4yo maiden rather than a punting free-for-all, with the market understandably centring on the trio with the strongest hurdle form. Cinating sets the standard on ratings after showing useful ability in better company, while Ritz Plan brings solid, consistent placed form and should be thereabouts again if ready after a break. Take The Free is the other obvious player for the Bolger yard, having posted the best Topspeed figure in the field and shaped as though this sharper test could suit. Behind them, Mike Des Mottes has bits and pieces of form and the Harrington runner God The Highness could step forward, but most of the remainder need major improvement. It’s not a deep race, but the front end looks quite solid.

Top Selections

1. Cinating – 15/8 with Paddy Power

Jockey: Kevin Sexton | Trainer: Gordon Elliott | Form: 34-4F | Rating: 120 | Topspeed:

Cinating is the one they all have to beat. A mark of 120 is comfortably the best on offer here and his form reads well for a race of this nature. He was placed twice before finishing fourth, and while he fell last time, that came after he had again travelled like a horse with a race in him. Gordon Elliott doesn’t need to do much improving to take this, and Kevin Sexton gets on well with these uncomplicated juvenile types. At 15/8 he is short enough, but not unreasonably so given he has the clearest piece of established hurdle form in the field. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Mike Des Mottes – 7/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Ben Harvey | Trainer: Cian Collins | Form: 4-8 | Rating: | Topspeed:

Mike Des Mottes makes more each-way appeal than most at the prices. His fourth on hurdle debut was not without promise and he wasn’t disgraced when eighth afterwards, especially in a race that may prove stronger than this. He still has a bit to find with the principals, but this doesn’t look overloaded with depth and Ben Harvey is the sort of rider you want in a race where position and rhythm matter. The 7/1 on offer looks fair for a horse who has already shown enough to suggest he can get involved if the big two underperform. He’s the each-way play rather than a confident win shout.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Cinating is the straightforward win bet and, in truth, he’s hard to oppose on the figures and known hurdle form. For a bit of value, Mike Des Mottes is the each-way option in a 14-runner field where three places are on offer. Ritz Plan is the obvious danger, while Take The Free is respected if building on his latest run.

17:18 – McNulty Furniture Rated Novice Hurdle

Race Details: 2m 4f | | Going: YIELDING TO SOFT, Soft in places on Chase course | | jumps

This might only have attracted three runners, but it is no penalty kick. Chanceawetmorning and Polepatrick are closely matched on official figures, both on 128, while Berto Ramirez gets plenty of weight as the lone 4yo and actually comes here with the highest rating in the field on 138. That makes it a fascinating little tactical novice rather than a straightforward match. Chanceawetmorning brings the strongest recent body of hurdling form, though his latest third suggests he is not bombproof, while Polepatrick arrives off a win and has the scope to improve again for Henry De Bromhead. Berto Ramirez is respected on the figures, but this looks a stiff enough assignment against older, battle-hardened rivals over 2m4f on softish ground. Tricky, but not impossible to unpick.

Top Selections

1. Chanceawetmorning – 5/4 with Bet365

Jockey: James Smith | Trainer: Gordon Elliott | Form: 2P1-13 | Rating: 128 | Topspeed: 110

He gets the vote because his hurdle form reads best in the context of this race and Gordon Elliott’s runner looks the most solid option in a field where there is nowhere to hide. That 1-3 sequence this season says he has held his level well, and the Topspeed mark of 110 backs up the visual impression that he has a proper engine for this sort of test. The latest defeat is hardly a deal-breaker in a race of this depth, and over 2m4f on yielding to soft he should get the chance to grind it out. At 5/4, he is not a giveaway, but he is still the one with the fewest questions to answer. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

Betting Strategy

Keep it simple in a three-runner race: Chanceawetmorning is the win bet and the only sensible play. There is no each-way angle in a field this small. Polepatrick is the obvious danger after his latest win and looks the main threat if building on that, while Berto Ramirez has the rating and weight pull to make things interesting if staying this trip strongly.

17:48 – Dermot Hughes Car Sales Handicap Hurdle

Race Details: 2m 4f | | Going: YIELDING TO SOFT, Soft in places on Chase course | | jumps

This looks a proper Roscommon handicap rather than a penalty kick, with several arriving off the back of solid spring efforts and a few lurking on dangerous marks. Billy Lee Swagger comes here after getting the job done last time and is the obvious starting point, while Avalo also signed off with a win and remains a likeable, uncomplicated type for this sort of test. Gordon Elliott’s Stede Bonnet has the class to play a major role but has to prove he can carry top weight in a race that should place the emphasis on stamina in these conditions. Simple Things is interesting at the foot of the weights after two runner-up efforts around this level. It’s competitive, no doubt, but not impossible to solve.

Top Selections

1. Billy Lee Swagger – 3/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Kevin Healy | Trainer: P J Rothwell | Form: P0P7-1 | Rating: 128 | Topspeed: 120

He’s hardly been the most straightforward horse to follow, but that latest win suggested Rothwell has him back in business and a repeat of it would make him very hard to beat here. The Topspeed figure of 120 is one of the better numbers in the field, and this mark of 128 still looks workable if that revival was genuine rather than a one-off. Kevin Healy keeps the ride and, in a race lacking loads of solid recent hurdle form, he stands out as the one arriving with momentum. At 3/1 he is short enough in a competitive handicap, but still the most likely winner. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Simple Things – 15/2 with Paddy Power

Jockey: Aidan Kelly | Trainer: J P Dempsey | Form: 7862-2 | Rating: 128 | Topspeed: 103

The 4yo gets in here with just 141 and that immediately makes him interesting in a race where several older rivals have more weight and arguably less upside. He ended last season with a second and returned with another runner-up effort, so the recent profile is far more appealing than a few of these better-known names. There’s every chance this step up to 2m4f on yielding-to-soft ground will suit, and younger legs can count for plenty around here when the race turns into a slog from the second-last. At 15/2, he looks the value play for an each-way punt. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Billy Lee Swagger is the win bet after a confidence-restoring success and looks the solid option in a race full of ifs and buts. For each-way purposes, Simple Things makes plenty of appeal from the foot of the weights and could easily improve again over this trip. Avalo and Stede Bonnet are the obvious dangers if producing their best.

18:18 – McGowan Accountancy Services Novice Chase

Race Details: 2m | | Going: YIELDING TO SOFT, Soft in places on Chase course | | jumps

This looks a small-field novice chase in numbers, but not quite the procession the market suggests. Workahead sets a lofty standard on a mark of 156 and arrives off a winning return, so on bare ability he is the one they all have to aim at. The question is whether anything can make a race of it over this sharp enough 2m on yielding-to-soft ground. Wild Bill Hickok gets plenty of weight as the sole 4yo and already looks a smart, progressive type over fences, while Scalpnagoon and Talk In The Park bring solid enough placed form to the table. Behind those, it starts to get patchy. It is not the deepest novice chase you will see, but there is enough depth underneath the favourite to make the place market interesting.

Top Selections

1. Workahead – 2/5 with Bet365

Jockey: Mike O’Connor | Trainer: Henry De Bromhead | Form: /429-1 | Rating: 156 | Topspeed: 139

Workahead is very hard to oppose if he turns up in the same mood as last time. A mark of 156 absolutely towers over this field and that Topspeed figure of 139 tells the same story: he has achieved a level the others simply have not. Henry De Bromhead places these novice chasers well and this looks a sensible spot to follow up. The slight negative, if you want one, is that 2/5 is hardly a gift in a race where one rival could improve past exposed figures, but class usually tells in this sort of event. If he jumps cleanly, he should take plenty of pegging back. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Wild Bill Hickok – 5/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Eoghan Finegan | Trainer: Ciaran Murphy | Form: 7P0-13 | Rating: 142 | Topspeed: 124

Wild Bill Hickok makes most appeal as the each-way play. He gets in with just 152, receives weight all round, and his recent 1-3 over fences suggests he is learning the job quickly. For a 4yo taking on older horses, a rating of 142 is already a fair effort and there could easily be more to come now he is going chasing. His latest third reads perfectly respectably in the context of this race, and 5/1 looks a workable price if you think the favourite is vulnerable to one improver rather than the field as a whole. He is the one I could see travelling well and nicking second, with an outside chance of making it interesting. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Keep it straightforward: Workahead is the win bet because his figures are miles clear and this looks an ideal opportunity. For an each-way alternative, Wild Bill Hickok is the sensible play with weight on his side and scope to improve again over fences. Scalpnagoon and Talk In The Park are the obvious dangers for the minors, but both may be playing for places if the favourite runs to form.

18:48 – Bet With Tote.ie On Racing & Sports Connacht National Handicap Chase

Race Details: 3m 1f | | Going: YIELDING TO SOFT, Soft in places on Chase course | | jumps

This is a proper summer staying handicap chase, deep enough to make a case for plenty but not one where you can kid yourself every runner is well treated. Harbour Highway, Killaney King and Bartlemy Boy bring solid recent handicap form, while Rocky’s Howya arrives off another win and clearly knows how to get his head in front. Pride Of Place comes here on the back of a revival, and A Penny A Hundred is the sort Mullins runner you ignore at your peril despite an underwhelming latest effort. At the top end, Rocky’s Diamond has the classiest profile on ratings, but giving lumps away over this trip on yielding-to-soft ground is never straightforward. It looks a tricky puzzle rather than a vintage renewal, and a well-handicapped stayer is likely to decide it late on.

Top Selections

1. Harbour Highway – 15/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Aidan Kelly | Trainer: Emmet Mullins | Form: 01P2-2 | Rating: 140 | Topspeed: 98

Harbour Highway makes plenty of appeal in a race where proven stamina and current wellbeing matter more than flashy profiles. He signed off last season with a second and returned with another runner-up effort, so the engine is clearly there, and a mark of 140 still looks workable if he gets a clean round. Emmet Mullins is not one to waste bullets in these staying handicaps, and this seven-year-old is lightly enough raced over fences to think there could still be a bit of upside. Available at 15/2, he looks the percentage call in a field full of doubts and inconsistent types. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Goody Four Shoes – 14/1 with Betfair

Jockey: Harry Sexton | Trainer: Thomas Gibney | Form: /45F-1 | Rating: 145 | Topspeed: 117

Goody Four Shoes is the one at a price who makes the most each-way sense. The profile is hardly bombproof, but that latest win said she still retains plenty of ability, and this stiff enough staying test on softish ground could suit a mare who looks happiest when it becomes a slog. The mark of 145 asks a question, yet she has the sort of back-class and stamina angle that can get her into the first five if things fall right. Harry Sexton knows her well enough, and in a 19-runner handicap you do not need to be perfect to hit the frame. At 14/1, she looks a fair each-way punt. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Harbour Highway is the win play because he arrives in form, stays, and still looks fairly treated for a yard adept in these races. Goody Four Shoes is the each-way alternative at a bigger price, with the five-place terms a clear plus. Killaney King and Bartlemy Boy are obvious dangers, while A Penny A Hundred is the lurking Mullins runner if bouncing back.

19:18 – Sweeney Oil Handicap Chase

Race Details: 2m | | Going: YIELDING TO SOFT, Soft in places on Chase course | | jumps

This looks a proper Roscommon handicap chase rather than a penalty kick, even if Spanish Maid is likely to dominate the betting after arriving here on the back of successive wins. She is clearly the one they all have to beat from the foot of the weights, but this is a deeper race than the market might suggest. Struck Oil and Presenting Lad arrive in decent nick, Soldante has bits of form that make him interesting, while L’Amiral Fromentin is one of the better-treated runners if building on his latest effort. Over this sharp 2m on yielding to soft ground, pace and clean jumping will matter plenty. It is not a vintage contest, but it is a competitive little handicap with a clear favourite and a few lively each-way angles against her.

Top Selections

1. Spanish Maid – 15/8 with Bet365

Jockey: Shane O’Callaghan | Trainer: Ross O’Sullivan | Form: 4821-1 | Rating: 115 | Topspeed: 101

Spanish Maid is hard to oppose. She signed off last season with a win and came back to follow up, so the mare arrives here in proper form and still gets in with just 140. In a race where plenty have questions to answer, she is the one coming here with the fewest. The mark of 115 still looks workable judged on that recent profile, and her Topspeed figure of 101 says she has the gears for a race like this. At 15/8 with Bet365 she is no giveaway, but sometimes the obvious one is obvious for a reason. If she jumps with her usual fluency, she sets the standard. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. L’Amiral Fromentin

Jockey: Dylan Robinson | Trainer: P J Rothwell | Form: 893-63 | Rating: 115 | Topspeed: 106

L’Amiral Fromentin looks the value play in the race. He is a 5yo with scope to do better over fences, and that latest third suggested things are beginning to click. Off 146, he is not burdened with much weight for a horse rated 115, and the Topspeed mark of 106 stacks up very well in this company. There are older exposed types around him in the betting, whereas he still has the profile of a progressive sort. Rothwell runners in these handicaps are rarely here for the scenery, and if he can build on that last run, he has the look of one who can sneak into the four at least. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Spanish Maid is the win play because she comes here thriving and is very well treated at the weights. For an each-way punt, L’Amiral Fromentin makes more appeal than some of the exposed alternatives and should be competitive if progressing again. Struck Oil is the obvious danger after a solid recent third, while Presenting Lad and Soldante also have enough form to get involved.

19:48 – Roscommon (Q.R.) Handicap Chase

Race Details: 2m 5f | | Going: YIELDING TO SOFT, Soft in places on Chase course | | jumps

This is a proper amateur-riders handicap chase: plenty in with chances, plenty with holes, and more than a few who arrive looking one mistake away from blowing it. Ballingurteen heads the market after a solid return to form and is the obvious starting point from a low weight, while Revolut Ned, Jouster and Kilashee all have pieces of form that make them serious players in this grade. Finnicky Filly is another with a workable mark and the sort of profile that gives her place claims in a race like this. The ground will put a premium on jumping and resolution over this trip, and in a 19-runner field around Roscommon that matters as much as raw ability. Tricky? Absolutely. But not impossible to solve.

Top Selections

1. Ballingurteen – 5/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Mr B T Stone | Trainer: Terence O’Brien | Form: 9P72-3 | Rating: | Topspeed:

He makes plenty of appeal in a race where many of these come with obvious health warnings. That latest third suggested he was coming to the boil again, and the earlier second also reads well enough in the context of this modest contest. As a 6yo, he has a bit more upside than some of these exposed older chasers and the feather weight is a definite plus on softening ground. Mr B T Stone gets the leg-up and, at 5/1 with Bet365, he looks the one with the best mix of current form and scope for a little improvement. He holds strong claims if jumping cleanly. Bet type: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Jouster – 13/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Mr O McGill | Trainer: Paul W Flynn | Form: 050-43 | Rating: 97 | Topspeed: 88

Jouster looks a very fair each-way play in a race paying five places. His last two runs have been perfectly respectable, finishing fourth and then third, and that topspeed figure of 88 is one of the more persuasive numbers on offer here. He is not wildly treated, but a mark of 97 is workable enough if he can hold his position early and avoid getting shuffled back in a big field. Paul W Flynn’s runner doesn’t need to improve much to be involved again, and 13/2 with Bet365 is a fair price for one who arrives with solid, reliable recent form in the book. Bet type: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Ballingurteen is the win play because he looks the likeliest improver in a race full of exposed types. Jouster makes plenty of sense as the each-way option with five places on offer, especially given his recent consistency. The obvious dangers are Revolut Ned, who ran better last time, and Kilashee, who is well enough handicapped if ready after the break.

20:18 – Roscommon Livestock Mart (Pro/Am) INH Flat Race

Race Details: 2m | | Going: YIELDING TO SOFT, Soft in places on Chase course | | jumps

This looks a pretty informative bumper for the grade, with the market understandably centred on the Willie Mullins pair and the already proven Tell The Boys. Linford brings the standout single piece of form after a winning debut and his figures suggest he sets the standard, but Tell The Boys is no back-number after progressing through his first three starts and getting off the mark last time. Skylab is the interesting unknown from the same top yard as the favourite, while Fleu Du Glaye and Coolnagrattan have shown enough to suggest they are not complete outsiders. In truth, though, this has the look of a race where class and professionalism should tell, and the front end of the market may well have it covered.

Top Selections

1. Linford – 5/6 with Bet365

Jockey: Mr P W Mullins | Trainer: W P Mullins | Form: 1 | Rating: 128 | Topspeed: 109

A debut winner for Willie Mullins with Mr P W Mullins booked again is rarely a profile to get cute against, and Linford’s numbers back up the obvious visual appeal. A 128 rating and 109 Topspeed already put him marginally clear of the chief opposition on what we know, and that first-time-out success suggests he has both ability and the right attitude for a contest like this. The 5/6 on offer is short, no question, but not unfair in a nine-runner bumper lacking depth behind the principals. If he takes the expected step forward from run one to run two, he is going to be hard to oppose. Bet type: WIN

2. Fleu Du Glaye – 25/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Mr S E O’Rourke | Trainer: P J Rothwell | Form: 3 | Rating: 112 | Topspeed: 95

If you want an each-way play against the obvious pair, Fleu Du Glaye makes more appeal than most at 25/1 with Bet365. He shaped with definite promise when third on his only recorded start, and a 112 rating with a 95 Topspeed is not wildly out of place in this line-up once you get beyond the top two in the market. Rothwell’s runners can improve with experience in these contests, and this one at least arrives with a bit of substance rather than pure guesswork attached. He does not need to find masses to nick a place, and in a race where some rivals are completely unexposed, that proven run counts for plenty. Bet type: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Keep it simple here: Linford is the win bet and looks the most solid option on both form and stable strength. For an each-way alternative, Fleu Du Glaye appeals at a big price because he has already shown he can be competitive in this sphere. The obvious danger is Tell The Boys, whose progressive profile makes him the main threat if the favourite underperforms.
