17:25 – Curragh To Curragh Charity Cycle on Saturday, August 29th Maiden Hurdle

Race Details: 2m 4f | | Going: Chase course – GOOD TO YIELDING; Hurdle course – GOOD | | jumps

This looks a typically deep Roscommon maiden hurdle, with numbers on the page but a fairly obvious starting point. Tumbling In sets the standard on recent placed form and on the figures, while Cool Native and Minella Moon Shine look the most credible dangers from those with established hurdle form. Carrigane and Star Cave are interesting after promising debut efforts in this sphere, and Goodmancon has bits and pieces of form that give him a shout if he stands up. Even so, this doesn’t strike me as an especially strong maiden for the grade; it’s more a race where a solid, straightforward type should get the job done. If Tumbling In runs to his mark, the rest may be playing for places.

Top Selections

1. Tumbling In – 6/5 with Bet365

Jockey: G B Noonan | Trainer: E McNamara | Form: 43-33 | Rating: 124 | Topspeed: 113

He’s the one with the clearest and strongest hurdle profile in the line-up. Those back-to-back third-place finishes after the break tell you he’s knocking firmly on the door, and a mark of 124 leaves him clear on official figures. The topspeed number backs that up too, which is often a useful guide in these ordinary-to-fair maiden hurdles. He stays, handles decent ground, and doesn’t need much imagination to see him improving again over 2m4f. At 6/5 he isn’t hiding, but this is one of those races where the obvious answer may simply be the right one. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Carrigane – 8/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Alan O’Sullivan | Trainer: Donncha Duggan | Form: 4 | Rating: | Topspeed:

For an each-way play, Carrigane makes plenty of appeal after shaping nicely when fourth on hurdle debut. In a race where several have already had chances and exposed their limitations, I’d rather side with one who may still have a chunk of progress in him. He’s a six-year-old, so not obviously unexposed in age terms, but that first run over timber at least suggested he can make a maiden hurdle of this nature. The market has him among the more interesting outsiders at 8/1, and in a 19-runner field with three places that looks a fair each-way punt against some shorter-priced rivals. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Tumbling In is the win bet and the one to keep things simple with, because he brings the best recent form and the best rating into the race. Carrigane is the each-way alternative at a more workable price in a big field. Cool Native and Minella Moon Shine are the obvious dangers, while Seven Towers has enough form to get involved if bouncing back.

18:00 – James Lohan Engineering Excellence Maiden Hurdle

Race Details: 1m 7f | | Going: Chase course – GOOD TO YIELDING; Hurdle course – GOOD | | jumps

This is a deep enough maiden hurdle for Roscommon, with a few obvious ones near the top of the market and plenty of lesser lights making up the numbers. Chantilly Wings brings the strongest hurdles profile on bare figures after her recent second, while Clay Pigeons is the interesting one from Closutton after winning a bumper and shaping like a useful prospect. Minella Hollow has a solid rating and doesn’t need to improve much to be in the mix again, and Whoyougonnacall has the sort of consistent placed form that makes him dangerous if the principals fluff their lines. The presence of unexposed types like Direct Approach adds a layer of intrigue, but this still looks a race where proven hurdles ability and tactical sharpness over this sharp trip should count for plenty.

Top Selections

1. Chantilly Wings – 11/4 with Bet365

Jockey: Carl Millar | Trainer: Cian Collins | Form: 4345-2 | Rating: 120 | Topspeed: 100

She sets a fair standard in this company and, unlike a few of these, there is no guesswork involved about whether she can handle a proper maiden hurdle. That rating of 120 is the best on offer, and her recent second suggests she remains in good nick rather than going the wrong way after a busy spell. Around Roscommon, where races can develop quickly, that experience matters. Carl Millar knows how to deliver one late, and if Chantilly Wings gets a decent tow into it she looks the one they all have to beat. At 11/4, she is short enough, but still the most solid option in the field. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Direct Approach – 11/1 with Paddy Power

Jockey: Jack Kennedy | Trainer: Gordon Elliott | Form: 9-63 | Rating: 115 | Topspeed: 82

There’s a bit more upside here than the price implies. Direct Approach has quietly started to put things together, and that latest third was his best effort yet over hurdles. He’s a 4yo getting weight from the older horses, and in a race where some of the exposed contenders may have reached their ceiling, that makes him appealing as an each-way punt. Jack Kennedy is an eye-catching booking at this level and Gordon Elliott’s runners in these maiden hurdles are never easily dismissed. He still has to find a little on the figures with the favourite, but 11/1 looks fair compensation for a horse who may not be done progressing just yet. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Chantilly Wings is the percentage call for the win bet given her proven level and the best rating in the race. For an each-way angle, Direct Approach makes more appeal than some of the shorter-priced rivals because he still has scope and gets weight. Clay Pigeons is the obvious danger if the Mullins runner takes a step forward over hurdles, while Minella Hollow also has claims.

18:30 – DNG Ivan Connaughton Handicap Hurdle

Race Details: 2m 7f | | Going: Chase course – GOOD TO YIELDING; Hurdle course – GOOD | | jumps

This is a proper staying handicap hurdle with depth, and it looks the sort of race where recent momentum counts for plenty. Sound Judgement arrives off a win and is an obvious starting point for Gordon Elliott, while Knocknagoran Lady has done nothing wrong in landing her last two and still looks on the upgrade. Mr Dibbs and She’ll Be Kept also come here after scoring, so there are no shortage of in-form contenders. The flip side is that several of these are exposed stayers, and in a 19-runner field over 2m7f you need more than just a workable mark. Stamina, tactical position and a clean round will decide plenty. It is competitive, but not impossible to solve, with the progressive types making much more appeal than the old guard.

Top Selections

1. Knocknagoran Lady – 7/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Daniel King | Trainer: Cian Hughes | Form: 83-611 | Rating: 111 | Topspeed: 96

She is the one I want to be with. Knocknagoran Lady has won her last two, comes here carrying only 155, and still looks like a mare going the right way rather than one who has hit her ceiling. A mark of 111 does not look beyond her at all given the authority of those recent wins, and in a race full of exposed stayers that progressive profile stands out. Daniel King keeps the partnership simple and effective, and at 7/2 she is not exactly hidden from the market, but she still makes plenty of appeal because there may be a bit more to come now stepping into a deeper staying handicap. Bet: WIN

2. Mr Dibbs – 9/1 with Sky Bet

Jockey: Eoin Staples | Trainer: Gavin Cromwell | Form: 062P-1 | Rating: 116 | Topspeed: 67

Mr Dibbs makes plenty of each-way appeal in a race paying five places. Gavin Cromwell’s runner returned from a break with a win last time, and that form line suggests he is in good enough heart to cope with a 5lb higher mark. His profile is not as sexy as the younger improvers lower down the weights, but he is a solid stayer and this looks the sort of test that should suit. Eoin Staples knows how to deliver one late in these big-field handicaps, and 9/1 looks fair enough for a horse arriving on the back of a confidence-boosting success. He does not need to improve bundles to get involved again. Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Knocknagoran Lady is the win play because she is progressive, well weighted and comes here in the right groove. Mr Dibbs is the each-way punt at a workable price in a race with five places on offer. The obvious danger is Sound Judgement, who is hard to knock after winning last time, while She’ll Be Kept and Smackwater Jack also have enough recent form to make this no gimme.

19:00 – J.F. Hanley Groundscare Beginners Chase

Race Details: 2m | | Going: Chase course – GOOD TO YIELDING; Hurdle course – GOOD | | jumps

This looks a fairly ordinary beginners’ chase on paper, but it is still a race with a clear shape to it. Hashtag Pretender sets the standard on ratings and was travelling well enough before falling on his latest start, so he is the obvious starting point. Impero has been knocking on the door without quite getting his head in front, while Killeemore Lad also arrives with a similar profile after a fall last time when not out of things. Behind that trio, the likes of Piccolo Player and Orkneys Jack have bits and pieces of form but need to step forward. In a seven-runner field where mistakes can easily decide matters, this feels more about who jumps cleanly than a deep contest packed with upside.

Top Selections

1. Hashtag Pretender – 6/4 with Bet365

Jockey: Sean Flanagan | Trainer: Barry Connell | Form: 3/23-F | Rating: 123 | Topspeed: 82

He is the one with the most persuasive credentials and, in truth, he will not need to be anything special to win this if putting in a clean round. A mark of 123 gives him a definite edge in this field and that recent fall is not enough to put me off, especially in a beginners’ chase where these things happen. Sean Flanagan is a positive booking and Barry Connell’s runners are rarely lacking in organisation. At 6/4 he is not exactly hidden from the market, but he still looks the most likely winner if his jumping holds together over this sharp 2m. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Killeemore Lad – 10/3 with Bet365

Jockey: Darragh O’keeffe | Trainer: Andrew Slattery | Form: 4822/F | Rating: 117 | Topspeed:

There is enough substance to his recent profile to make him interesting as the each-way alternative. He had been running consistently well before that latest fall, and a rating of 117 leaves him with solid place claims in a race where only a handful look realistic contenders. He does not have the same ceiling as the favourite, but he has shown enough to suggest this sort of beginners’ chase is within reach if the market leader underperforms. At 10/3, he is short enough for an each-way play in a seven-runner race with only two places, but he still makes more appeal than the rest for those wanting cover against the obvious one.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Hashtag Pretender is the win play and makes the most sense on the ratings and overall profile. For an each-way punt, Killeemore Lad is the one to side with, as his earlier consistency gives him a decent chance of hitting the first two. Impero is the obvious danger after a string of respectable efforts, but he is becoming a little expensive to follow.

19:30 – Kepak Handicap Chase

Race Details: 2m 5f | | Going: Chase course – GOOD TO YIELDING; Hurdle course – GOOD | | jumps

This is a properly competitive handicap chase with 19 declared, the sort of Roscommon contest where solid jumping and a bit of tactical patience usually matter as much as raw ability. Ladies Well arrives on the back of a win and is an obvious starting point, while Island McCoo, Dunany Point and Run For The Border all bring recent enough form that gives them major respect. Not So Serious is interesting after getting his head in front last time, though that came after a sequence of non-completions and he now has to prove it was no fluke. There are a few lurkers lower down the weights, but plenty of these come with questions attached. It looks a tricky puzzle rather than a deep race, and I’d rather side with runners who are at least arriving here in some sort of nick.

Top Selections

1. Dunany Point – 6/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Kieren Buckley | Trainer: Conor David Maxwell | Form: 89-0P3 | Rating: 102 | Topspeed: 91

He makes plenty of appeal in a race where not many are bombproof. That latest third was a step back in the right direction after a couple of laboured efforts, and his mark of 102 looks workable in this grade if he can build on it. The key thing with Dunany Point is that he has enough pace for this sort of trip and his better efforts suggest good to yielding ground won’t inconvenience him. Kieren Buckley knows the horse well enough and, in a field full of patchy profiles, a relatively uncomplicated recent run counts for plenty. Available at 6/1, he looks the percentage call. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Run For The Border – 15/2 with Sky Bet

Jockey: | Trainer: John Patrick Ryan | Form: 157-32 | Rating: | Topspeed:

He has top weight to contend with, which is never ideal in a race of this nature, but his recent profile is still attractive. The form figures suggest he has come back in good heart, and that latest second says he’s knocking firmly on the door. John Patrick Ryan’s runner looks the type to give you a run for your money if coping with this burden, and his consistency is more appealing than some of the shorter-priced alternatives. At 15/2 he shapes as the each-way value, especially with five places on offer in such a big field. He doesn’t need much imagination to see him travelling strongly into the race and sticking on. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Dunany Point is the win play at around 6/1 because he looks fairly treated and arrives off a run that hinted at a return to form. Run For The Border is the each-way punt at 15/2, with his recent consistency making him an obvious place contender despite top weight. Ladies Well is the danger if backing up that latest win, while Island McCoo also has enough form to get involved.

20:00 – Campbell’s Bar Ballinlough Handicap Chase

Race Details: 3m 1f | | Going: Chase course – GOOD TO YIELDING; Hurdle course – GOOD | | jumps

This is the sort of big-field summer handicap chase that can make fools of plenty, and there are a few with perfectly respectable claims. Il Silenzio is the obvious starting point after a win and a solid return effort, while One Way Traffic arrives off a runner-up finish and looks sure to be popular. Oogum Boogum has been knocking around in decent nick from a workable mark, and Kilkee Bay also comes here in form for a yard doubly represented. The younger legs of Thewaybackhome are interesting too, especially if improving again over this trip. Even so, it is not a deep race full of unexposed lurkers; it looks more a matter of which exposed handicapper gets the run of things and sees out the 3m1f best.

Top Selections

1. Il Silenzio – 11/4 with Bet365

Jockey: Conor Smithers | Trainer: Martin Brassil | Form: /3P1-4 | Rating: 104 | Topspeed: 85

Il Silenzio makes plenty of appeal in a race where several of these have had their chances. He got his head back in front before the break and his latest fourth suggested he has returned in good enough order to strike again from a mark of 104. That rating sets a fair standard in this company, and his profile over staying trips is stronger than many of these flaky rivals. Conor Smithers is a positive booking and Brassil’s horses usually know their job in races like this. At 11/4 he is hardly a secret, but he is the one with the fewest holes in his case. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Oogum Boogum – 13/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Carl Millar | Trainer: David Kenneth Budds | Form: -13238 | Rating: 99 | Topspeed: 82

Oogum Boogum looks the each-way value in a race where plenty are either badly out of form or vulnerable under higher weights. His recent form figures are solid enough without being flashy, and that is often the right shape for these competitive staying handicaps. He has been running from around this level consistently, and a mark of 99 leaves him nicely treated if he can reproduce his better efforts. Carl Millar takes over and the horse has the look of one who should be well suited by a proper stamina test around Roscommon. At 13/2, he appeals as the percentage play for the frame with a live chance of more. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Il Silenzio is the win play because he brings the strongest recent form and the most convincing overall profile for this trip. Oogum Boogum is the each-way punt at a fairer price in a 19-runner race with five places on offer. One Way Traffic and Thewaybackhome look the main dangers if building on their latest placed efforts.

20:30 – Brian Keenan On-Course Bookmaker INH Flat Race

Race Details: 1m 7f | | Going: Chase course – GOOD TO YIELDING; Hurdle course – GOOD | | jumps

This looks a typically messy late-summer Roscommon bumper: plenty of unexposed 4yos, a handful with bits of form, and no shortage of guesswork around the debutants. The safest pieces of evidence belong to Mountain Sky, who has already shown he can be competitive in this sphere, while Iron Sword also enters calculations after a fair introduction and strong market support. Mr Enigma has the benefit of a placed effort, and Inishtearaght wasn’t disgraced on debut either, but neither arrives bombproof. Then there are the unknowns such as Lola O C, Rocky Alfonso and Lonelyharbourwall, all prominent enough in the market to suggest expectation. It’s not a deep race on paper, but it is a tricky puzzle because the newcomers could easily shift the balance.

Top Selections

1. Mountain Sky – 6/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Mr Finian Maguire | Trainer: Gerard Edmund O’Leary | Form: 52 | Rating: 106 | Topspeed: 69

Mountain Sky sets the standard on what we actually know. He stepped forward from his debut fifth to finish second last time, and that 106 rating is the best on offer among those with established form. In a race full of guesswork, that counts for plenty. He looks the sort who has learned his job quickly, and this 1m7f should be absolutely fine judged on how he shaped. At 6/1, he appeals as the percentage call rather than a sexy one, but there’s nothing wrong with siding with the solid option in a bumper like this. He holds strong claims if reproducing that latest effort. Bet: WIN

2. Mr Enigma – 15/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Mr D McGill | Trainer: Conor David Maxwell | Form: 3 | Rating: 96 | Topspeed: 62

Mr Enigma makes some each-way appeal because he has already shown he can get involved at the business end, and in a 17-runner bumper that is no small thing. A debut third gives him a platform, and while his figures don’t scream star quality, they do suggest he’s capable of being competitive again if building on that first run. He doesn’t need to improve dramatically to hit the frame, whereas several of these still have everything to prove under race conditions. Available at 15/2, he looks a sensible each-way punt in a contest where plenty will be learning on the job and some of the shorter ones are relying on reputation. Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Mountain Sky is the win play on the strength of the most convincing form in the field and the highest published rating. For an each-way alternative, Mr Enigma has the right profile for a big-field bumper after already making the frame. The obvious dangers are Lola O C and Rocky Alfonso, who are respected in the market despite bringing no public form to the table.
