Day 1 of Royal Ascot is set to be a sensational day’s racing, with seven races getting underway at 2.30pm. Some hugely exciting Group 1 races will take place alongside competitive handicaps, with the action concluding at 6.10pm.
Steve Chambers provides his Royal Ascot Day 1 tips with four selections that can be put in a Lucky 15 for the action on Tuesday 16th June.
2.30 Royal Ascot – Queen Anne Stakes – Zeus Olympios (1pt win – 10/1)
Beaten on his two previous visits to Ascot, Notable Speech is certainly worth taking on in the Queen Anne Stakes at 2.30pm. More Thunder is entitled to be a leading contender, but needs everything to go his own way, so is another to ignore. One that catches the eye and can land the prize is Zeus Olympios for Karl Burke and Clifford Lee. Third behind Notable Speech and More Thunder in the Lockinge Stakes, the Night Of Thunder colt has form to turn around. However, if held on to a little bit longer then he’s one that could strike in the closing stages. He hit the front in the Lockinge before tiring late on, so if the aforementioned Lee can be brave and wait then he could propel home to grab a shock win.
3.40 Royal Ascot – King Charles III Stakes – Mission Central (1pt win – 10/1)
Aidan O’Brien has a multitude of Group 1 victories on his glittering CV, but the master of Ballydoyle is yet to have the King Charles III Stakes on his record. Well, that winless streak in the 5f sprint can be broken on Tuesday at 3.40pm. He will saddle the hugely progressive sprinter Mission Central, who has bagged a brace of listed wins and can step up again. Plenty of his rivals are potentially on the downgrade and with three-year-olds receiving weight from their elder rivals then the No Nay Never gelding is one that can sparkle here. A former winner at Ascot as a juvenile, he’s won twice at Naas this season, so heads to Berkshire in the form of his life. He will need a lot more again, but he’s certainly worth his spot in the line-up and the rapid Ballydoyle runner can claim victory.
5.00 Royal Ascot – Ascot Stakes – Reaching High (1pt win – 9/4)
Willie Mullins can claim a fourth win in the Ascot Stakes at 5.00pm, as Reaching High can land the marathon contest. Owned by His Majesty The King, the five-year-old hasn’t been seen on the track since finishing ninth in this race last year off a mark of 94. However, he’d have finished a lot closer to the front had he gained a clear path, so he’s entitled to be upgraded for that run. He runs off the same mark here, and the Closutton handler Mullins has shown down the years that he can get one cherry ripe first time out. Ryan Moore will hope for a cleaner passage this time around, but if he can show his best here then Reaching High can land a royal winner on day one of the meeting.
5.35 Royal Ascot – Wolferton Stakes – Ghostwriter (1pt win – 9/1)
Ghostwriter is another that hasn’t been seen on the racecourse since Royal Ascot 12 months ago. Trained by Clive Cox at the 2025 meeting he was a creditable third place in the Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes. Now under the stewardship of Kevin Philippart De Foy, he now drops into listed company at 5.35pm for the Wolferton Stakes. He will face a whole plethora of classy performers, but if he can replicate that Hardwicke run then he certainly has to come into calculations. One of the toughest betting heats of the day, Ghostwriter is that runner in this event that could simply be too classy for his rivals.
