Day five of Royal Ascot takes place on Saturday 20th June, with a stunning seven-race card concluding the Flat extravaganza. The Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes is the feature race on the card at 3.40pm and our tipster Steve Chambers fancies a foreign runner to land that 6f sprint.
He picks out three other selections for Saturday’s racing, which can be added to make up an eye-catching Lucky 15 for the day.
3.05 Royal Ascot – Hardwicke Stakes – Best Secret (1pt win – 12/1)
Kalpana, Jan Breughel and Goliath all have some top notch Group 1 wins on their CV and they are the three leading contenders for the Hardwicke Stakes at 3.05pm. The former is the most likely winner of the three having shown to be top class at Ascot when winning the Fillies’ & Mares’ Stakes. However, one that could upset the apple cart is Best Secret, who was last seen winning a Group 3 in France. Third in the Golden Gates Stakes on his last visit to Royal Ascot, he’s come on considerably from that run, and beat West Wind Blows last time out. A winner at Goodwood in handicap on quick going, he’s shown his best on soft, but he’s one that could have notable improvement to come and could well spring a surprise.
3.40 Royal Ascot – Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes – Overpass (1pt win – 17/2)
Third in the King Charles III Stakes on Tuesday, Overpass will be looking to improve on that effort in Saturday’s feature, the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at 3.40pm. He was up with the pace that day and managed to stay on all the way to finish before being collared by Mission Central. Now stepping up to six furlongs he has the small matter of trying to down fellow Australian speedball Joliestar and Japanese raider Satono Reve. However, Tuesday’s experience is sure to be a massive positive and if he can break a little better and get himself in front early then he will be tough to catch, despite the fact he will be clinging on in the latter stages.
4.20 Royal Ascot – Jersey Stakes – Saber Strike (1pt win – 2/1)
Impressive when winning by three lengths on debut at Redcar, Saber Strike then produced another scintillating display to win a listed event at Newmarket by one-and-a-quarter lengths. The William Haggas-trained three-year-old will now look to claim Group success at 4.20pm and land victory in the Jersey Stakes. This is a tougher assignment again, but the manner in which he has improved on his first two starts has suggested there could be significantly more to come during his career. The likes of Into The Sky, Catullus and The Prettiest Star add notable depth to the race, but Saber Strike is a colt with huge potential and the son of Night Of Thunder can outclass his rivals.
6.10 Royal Ascot – Queen Alexandra Stakes – Le Destrier (1pt win – 9/4)
With five wins in the Queen Alexandra Stakes, Willie Mullins is the most successful trainer in the history of the race. The master of Closutton who is more seen dominating at the major National Hunt festivals can strike gold again at Royal Ascot with Le Destrier in the last race of the meeting at 6.10pm. Le Destrier will represent the Closutton yard and he was last seen finishing a fine third behind Thursday’s Gold Cup hero Scandinavia in the Group 3 Saval Beg Stakes at Leopardstown. Now dropping down to handicap company, if he can replicate that display then he should be far too good for the likes of Illinois and French Master.
