Steve Chambers' Royal Ascot Wednesday Tips - Best bets for day 2 of Royal meeting

Royal Ascot provides another sensational day’s racing on Wednesday 17 June, with some hugely competitive races taking place throughout the day. Our in-house tipster Steve Chambers previews all the action at the Berkshire track and picks out his best Royal Ascot Wednesday tips.

3.05 Royal Ascot – Queen’s Vase – Limestone (1pt win – 7/2)

Joseph O’Brien’s Limestone looks every bit a stayer, as he showed when winning over 1m 5f last time out at Navan. Stepping up in trip again in the Queen’s Vase at 3.05pm, the Irish contender can stretch his winning run to four races and hand his trainer another notable Group winner on the flat. He comfortably beat Asakir that day at Navan, and that pair will do battle again here. However, it’s hard to see that form being turned around and the main danger appears to be Andrew Balding’s Galiyan. A winner at Chester last time out, the lightly-raced contender is open to significant improvement, but may just lack that progression to down the O’Brien challenger.

15:05 Queen’s Vase (Group 2)

3.40 Royal Ascot – Duke Of Cambridge Stakes – Godspeed (1pt win – 11/1)

Several will line up in the Duke Of Cambridge Stakes at 3.40pm with a chance of landing the fillies’ and mares’ Group 2, but a French starlet can shine brightest with Godspeed landing the coveted prize. A French Group 2 winner she was last seen finishing a narrow runner-up in a listed event at Longchamp. The pair pulled two lengths clear of the field that day, so she will head to Ascot in excellent shape. Goodwood listed winner Blue Bolt is the one to beat in the contest, but there could be more progression to come from Godspeed, who at double-figured odds looks excellent value in a devilishly difficult betting heat.

15:40 Duke Of Cambridge Stakes (Group 2) (Fillies & Mares)

4.20 Royal Ascot – Prince Of Wales’s Stakes – Ombudsman (1pt win – 11/8)

John and Thady Gosden’s Ombudsman produced a scintillating performance to win the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes last season. Now, the Godolphin raider is back to try and retain his crown and is a prominent figure in the betting. A real top-class act, if he can turn up in similar form to last year then he’s going to be tough to beat. He will face a lively rival in the shape of Arc hero Daryz, but with the ground likely to be on the quick side for that French raider then Ombudsman can scoot clear from him. Ombudsman won the Brigadier Gerard Stakes at Sandown cosily to prep him for this event, so he comes here in good form. If he can reproduce his best then he can cement his place as the premier 10f horse in Europe.

16:20 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes (Group 1)

5.35 Royal Ascot – Kensington Palace Stakes – Rhapsody (1pt each way – 14/1)

Hot favourite Alobayyah is undoubtedly the flagbearer for William Haggas in the Kensington Palace Stakes, but he could have another lively contender in Rhapsody. A winner at York on her last British outing, she will need to contend with a 9lbs rise, which is a big ask, but she looks a filly that is capable of continuing her improvement. She went over to Milan for a listed contest on her last outing, where she was a close third, but a drop to handicap company could see her at her best. This will need a career best, but she’s certainly going the right way and is worth an each-way play.

17:35 Kensington Palace Stakes (Fillies’ Handicap)
