It’s Shergar Cup day at Ascot on Saturday 6th August as the four teams of Great Britain & Ireland, Europe, Hong Kong Jockey Club and the Rest of the World do battle during an afternoon of thrilling flat racing.
Putting the team competition to one side, our in-house tipster Steve Chambers picks out his best bets across the day’s action.
2.45 Ascot – Frances Ethel (1pt win – 11/2)
Frances Ethel has not been seen on the track since finishing a fine second at Lingfield way back in December. The William Haggas-trained mare is making her first start for 248 days in the Shergar Cup Challenge Handicap at 2.45pm, and could be the winner. She’s been upped 2lbs by the handicapper for that last outing, but she could be one that has potential to improve. Plenty line up on the back of some hard races, where they’ve been beaten, and Frances Ethel could have more progression to come.
3.20 Ascot – May Angel (1pt win – 9/1)
John & Thady Gosden’s May Angel has arguably put up his best performances when competing at Ascot. The son of Dark Angel was a decent third at the track back in May, whilst he wasn’t completely out of it when eighth in the Palace Of Holyroodhouse Handicap at the Royal meeting. He was no match to Nunthorpe-bound Bacio that day, and he was a disappointing eighth at Newmarket on his last outing. However, a return to Ascot off a 1lb lower mark can see him perform with credit again and land the Shergar Cup Sprint over six furlongs.
3.55 Ascot – Hoseki (1pt win – 7/4)
One of the most in-form performers heading to Ascot on Saturday is Hoseki, who will be tough to beat in the Shergar Cup Classic at 3.55pm. The daughter of Saxon Warrior has racked up three wins on the bounce, with victories at Redcar, Chester and Ascot. She’s been given a 5lbs rise by the handicapper for that recent win at Ascot, but the Haggas-trained raider could still be capable of defying a mark of 88. Archers Bay and Level Look could pose the biggest threat, but Saffie Osborne can strike for the home team with victor aboard Hoseki in the penultimate race of the day.
4.30 Ascot – Cerulean Bay (1pt win – 6/1)
Second in the Golden Mile Handicap at Glorious Goodwood last week, Cerulean Bay makes a swift return to track in the Shergar Cup Mile at 4.30pm. David O’Meara’s five-year-old has been in rattling good form this season, but has just struggled to get his head in front. Prior to that Goodwood defeat he was fourth at Pontefract, and ran a fine race when fifth in the Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot. He’s only been bumped up 1lb by the handicap for that Golden Mile run, so a repeat of that effort here, in a less competitive race, should see him prevail.
