16:53 – Sky Sports Racing Sky 415 Apprentice Handicap

Race Details: 7f | Class 5 | Going: Standard (Tapeta) | | flat

This is a proper apprentice handicap puzzle rather than a race to get carried away with, but there are a few solid recent form lines to work with. Dannick arrives off a win and is an obvious contender despite carrying top weight, while Timely Affair has been knocking loudly on the door and looks very reliable in this grade. Avatar Jet is another with a fair bit going for him if overcoming a wide stall, and Anthropologist has the inside draw plus enough raw ability to get involved if things drop right. In a 14-runner 7f handicap at Southwell, position and pace matter plenty, and a few of these are closely matched on official figures. It looks competitive rather than strong, with value likely sitting just behind the obvious market leaders.

Top Selections

1. Timely Affair – 5/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Jack Nicholls | Trainer: William Knight | Form: 522133 | Rating: 81 | Topspeed: 68

Timely Affair is the one I keep coming back to because his profile is rock-solid for this sort of race. He has been thriving in handicaps, his last three runs reading 1st, 3rd, 3rd, and that Topspeed figure of 68 is the best in the field. From stall 7 he should get a fair trip, and carrying just 130 looks workable for a 4yo still holding his form well. William Knight’s runner doesn’t need much dressing up: he is consistent, effective at this level and unlikely to beat himself. At 5/1, he makes plenty of appeal against rivals with either more weight or shakier profiles. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Finn Ironside – 10/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Elle-May Croot | Trainer: Ivan Furtado | Form: 043874 | Rating: 79 | Topspeed: 62

Finn Ironside is not the most straightforward conveyance, but he is better than his recent bare finishing positions suggest and he looks interesting at double-figure odds. He has a handy draw in 5, carries only 130, and his mark of 79 gives him a squeak in a race where plenty can be given a chance. His earlier placed efforts hinted that he still retains enough ability to be competitive in this grade, and Ivan Furtado’s runners often pop up in these Southwell handicaps when the market has eased off them a touch. At 10/1 with four places on offer, he looks the type to outrun his price and nick a place at the very least. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Timely Affair is the win play here because he brings the cleanest recent profile and the strongest speed figure. For an each-way alternative, Finn Ironside makes more appeal than some of the shorter ones in a race full of closely matched exposed handicappers. Dannick is the obvious danger after his latest win, while Avatar Jet also has enough about him if coping with the draw.

17:28 – Download The At The Races App ‘Confined’ Maiden Stakes (No More Than Three Runs) (GBB) (Div I)

Race Details: 7f | Class 4 | Going: Standard (Tapeta) | | flat

This looks a decent confined maiden for the grade, with the market understandably circling around the three standout 3yos Hulk Power, Burning Impact and Foxy Night. Foxy Night brings the most solid body of form after three runs and sets the standard on the figures, while Burning Impact shaped with plenty of promise on debut for Ralph Beckett and ought to come forward sharply. Hulk Power is the intriguing one as a Roger Varian newcomer, and the market rarely gets his yard wrong in this type of race. Behind those, it gets murkier, though Thairish and perhaps Real Trouper have enough about them to make the principals work. In a 13-runner maiden with unexposed types, it is not bombproof, but the key form is at the head of the betting.

Top Selections

1. Foxy Night – 5/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Mikey Sheehy | Trainer: John Butler | Form: 433 | Rating: 82 | Topspeed: 55

There is no mystery about Foxy Night: he has shown his hand, and it is a pretty useful one in the context of this race. Three runs in, he brings the best official mark in the field and a clear edge on Topspeed, having hit the frame on his last two starts. That makes him the safest option in a race where a couple of the dangers are relying on promise rather than substance. The slight concern is that he may prove vulnerable to a smart debutant or an improver, but around Southwell’s 7f you would rather side with the one who has already posted the numbers. At 5/2, he is the solid win play.

Bet: WIN

2. Thairish – 14/1 with Paddy Power

Jockey: George Bass | Trainer: Jack Channon | Form: | Rating: | Topspeed:

Thairish is the each-way angle in a race where the obvious trio dominate the conversation and the rest are easy to dismiss too quickly. Jack Channon’s runner is one of the more interesting unraced types in here, and stall 2 is no bad place to begin over this trip. You are taking a leap on potential rather than evidence, but at 14/1 that is exactly the sort of chance worth taking in a confined maiden full of limited exposed form behind the principals. If one of the market leaders underperforms, Thairish looks the sort who could sneak into the first three and possibly do better.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Foxy Night is the percentage call and makes most appeal as the win bet given his proven form and superior figures. For an each-way punt, Thairish appeals at a double-figure price in a race where the depth falls away quickly after the top three in the market. The main dangers are Hulk Power, if fully tuned up first time, and Burning Impact, who has obvious improvement in him.

18:01 – Download The At The Races App ‘Confined’ Maiden Stakes (No More Than Three Runs) (GBB) (Div II)

Race Details: 7f | Class 4 | Going: Standard (Tapeta) | | flat

This looks a maiden where the market should have the answer, and in truth the race revolves around a handful of lightly raced 3yos with proper upside. Dovecote sets the standard on a mark of 77 after finishing second on his return, while Conspiracist has shown useful enough form in two starts and Gran Ventura appeals as another obvious player after making the frame on debut. Beyond that trio, it gets thin quickly. Pure Passion has at least hit the places twice and For Ever Hopefull is not entirely dismissed, but plenty of these are either unraced outsiders or older types who have already shown their limitations. It is not the deepest Class 4 maiden you’ll see, but sorting the favourite from the value play is the key.

Top Selections

1. Dovecote – 10/11 with Bet365

Jockey: Hector Crouch | Trainer: Ralph Beckett | Form: 0-2 | Rating: 77 | Topspeed:

Dovecote is the one they all have to beat. That latest second is comfortably the best recent piece of form on offer in this field and a mark of 77 leaves him clear on the figures. Ralph Beckett does not need much help in races of this nature and Hector Crouch is an eye-catching booking for a colt who should know plenty more now. The drop into this confined event looks a sensible move and the 7f on Tapeta ought to be well within range. At odds-on you’re not stealing money, but he sets the standard and is hard to oppose if reproducing that last run. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Gran Ventura – 10/3 with Bet365

Jockey: Kevin Stott | Trainer: Jack Channon | Form: 3- | Rating: 69 | Topspeed:

If you want something against the favourite at a fairer price, Gran Ventura makes plenty of appeal each-way. He shaped with promise when third on debut and, with only that one start behind him, there should be more to come. A rating of 69 does leave him with a bit to find on Dovecote, but this is a race where improvement matters more than bare numbers and Jack Channon’s runner is open to exactly that. Stall 3 is no bad place to start from around here and Kevin Stott is the sort you want on a horse expected to travel into it. At 10/3, he looks the sensible each-way punt. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Dovecote is the straightforward win play and the one with the cleanest profile in the race. For an each-way alternative in a 13-runner field, Gran Ventura looks the value against the favourite, especially if taking a step forward from debut. Conspiracist is the obvious danger after two respectable efforts and is the one most likely to punish any weakness from the top pair.

18:36 – Sky Sports Racing Virgin 512 Restricted Novice Stakes (Horses In Bands C/D) (GBB Race) (Div I)

Race Details: 6f | Class 5 | Going: Standard (Tapeta) | | flat

This doesn’t look the deepest novice you’ll see at Southwell and the market has latched on to the right pair. Rlasthope brings the standout body of form with a mark of 84 after a string of solid efforts, while Beresford Gap shaped like a useful colt in the making when third last time and is the obvious threat from a good yard. Behind them, plenty are either exposed already or still guessing games on debut, with L B Double U and Harry Who the more interesting unexposed types if the principals underperform. Southwell’s 6f on Tapeta usually rewards youngsters who can travel and keep rolling, so proven form counts for plenty here. It’s not impossible, but it does look a race where the obvious ones may well dominate.

Top Selections

1. Rlasthope – 9/4 with Paddy Power

Jockey: Tom Eaves | Trainer: Tony Coyle & Kaine Wood | Form: 5233 | Rating: 84 | Topspeed:

Rlasthope sets the standard and, in a race full of guesswork, that counts for a lot. He’s been knocking on the door in better style than most of these could dream of, with that 5233 sequence showing both consistency and a fair level of ability. An 84 rating is a major asset in this company and he doesn’t need to improve much to take this. Tom Eaves knows the horse well enough now and if he gets him into a smooth rhythm from a wide draw, he should simply prove stronger than most of these late on. At 9/4, he’s not a giveaway, but he’s still the one they all have to beat. Bet: WIN

2. Harry Who – 17/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Cam Hardie | Trainer: Richard & Peter Fahey | Form: 4 | Rating: 61 | Topspeed:

For an each-way play, Harry Who makes more appeal than many at the prices. He showed enough when fourth on debut to suggest there’s a race in him, and in this sort of restricted novice you don’t need to be a world-beater to hit the frame. The Fahey team can bring juveniles forward plenty from first to second run, and Cam Hardie is a perfectly solid booking for a race of this nature. He’s drawn a little wider than ideal, but if breaking on terms and finding cover, he looks capable of improving past several of the exposed ones here. Available at 17/2, he strikes me as a sensible each-way punt in a race lacking depth beyond the front two. Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Keep it straightforward: Rlasthope is the win bet because his form and rating tower over most of these. Harry Who is the each-way alternative at a fair enough price, especially with three places on offer in a big field. Beresford Gap is the obvious danger and could easily make this a match, while L B Double U is the debutant worth a second glance if the market speaks positively.

19:11 – Sky Sports Racing Virgin 512 Restricted Novice Stakes (Horses In Bands C/D) (GBB Race) (Div II)

Race Details: 6f | Class 5 | Going: Standard (Tapeta) | | flat

This looks a fairly ordinary restricted novice on paper, but there are still a couple with form already good enough to dominate if they step forward as expected. Enamored sets the standard after a promising debut third and has the plum draw in stall 1, while Too Many Spirits brings the strongest body of racecourse experience and ought to make another bold bid. Little Mester also enters calculations after shaping well first time out and he doesn’t need much improvement to get seriously involved. Behind those, it gets murkier, with Bella Lucia probably the most interesting of the bigger prices, especially on the figures. In truth, this is not a deep race, but it is a race where the obvious ones do have substance behind them.

Top Selections

1. Enamored – 6/4 with Bet365

Jockey: Hector Crouch | Trainer: Ed Dunlop | Form: 3 | Rating: 80 | Topspeed:

Enamored is the one they all have to beat. A debut third is a solid starting point in this grade and that mark of 80 is right up there in the field, especially for a filly carrying only 128. The inside draw is another plus over this 6f and Hector Crouch is the sort you want on a juvenile expected to travel and pick up. There should be natural improvement from first to second start, and in a race lacking depth beyond the principals, she looks hard to oppose. At 6/4 she is not a giveaway, but she is the likeliest winner by some margin. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Bella Lucia – 12/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Rowan Scott | Trainer: Gemma Tutty | Form: 36 | Rating: 73 | Topspeed:

Bella Lucia makes more each-way appeal than most of the double-figure prices in here. Her form figures of 3 and 6 are respectable enough in the context of this race, and an official mark of 73 gives her a better chance than the market initially suggests. She also gets in with just 125, which won’t hurt in a novice of this type. Draw 10 is not ideal, but this is a race where several of these have shown very little, so proven competitiveness counts for plenty. Available at 12/1, she looks the value against some unexposed but completely unproven rivals. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Keep it simple: Enamored is the win play and looks the solid option if building multiples or backing one straight. For an each-way punt, Bella Lucia appeals at the prices because she has already shown enough to make the frame in this company. Too Many Spirits is the obvious danger, while Little Mester also has the profile of one who could easily improve past these.

19:46 – Free Tips On attheraces.com Handicap

Race Details: 1m 4f | Class 6 | Going: Standard (Tapeta) | | flat

This looks a perfectly ordinary Class 6 on paper, but it is not lacking in angles. Urban Warrior heads the market after shaping as though this sort of trip can be exploited, while Koko Blue arrives with two solid placed efforts and the benefit of stall 1. Saachi is another with obvious claims after a win and a runner-up effort, and Belle Of Kt keeps knocking on the door in this grade without quite getting her head in front often enough. Night Bear is a familiar, reliable operator at this level, but he does not find much. Zucayan is the wildcard returning from a break. It is not a deep race, though, and that usually means a straightforward stayer with current form can take control.

Top Selections

1. Urban Warrior – 9/4 with Bet365

Jockey: Jason Hart | Trainer: Stuart Williams | Form: 96-443 | Rating: 70 | Topspeed: 26

Urban Warrior has started to look like one of those who is about to cash in at this level. His last two runs, both finishing third, suggest he is settling into his work and shaping as though this 1m4f on Tapeta is exactly what he wants. He is only a 4yo in a race featuring plenty of exposed older handicappers, and that matters in a contest like this. The outside draw is not ideal, but Jason Hart is more than capable of getting him organised early. At 9/4 he is not hiding from anyone, but he still makes plenty of appeal as the one with the most obvious upside. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Koko Blue – 6/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Laura Pearson | Trainer: Tom Clover | Form: 930-33 | Rating: 69 | Topspeed: 61

Koko Blue looks the each-way value. Those two recent thirds were solid efforts rather than flashy ones, but in a race of this nature consistency counts for plenty. The draw in stall 1 should help Laura Pearson hold a handy position, and this is not a horse who needs miracles to hit the frame again. His Topspeed figure stands out well enough for the grade, and he has fewer miles on the clock than some of these battle-hardened rivals. At 6/1, he makes more appeal than a few shorter-priced runners because you can see the race setting up neatly for him from the inside. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Urban Warrior is the percentage call and looks the right win bet given his profile and recent efforts over staying trips. For an each-way punt, Koko Blue makes plenty of sense from a good draw and arrives in reliable nick. The main dangers are Saachi, who is holding his form well, and Belle Of Kt, who is often thereabouts in races of this standard.

20:21 – Get Raceday Ready Handicap

Race Details: 1m 3f | Class 6 | Going: Standard (Tapeta) | | flat

With Dijon Gone a non-runner, this looks a fairly ordinary 3yo Class 6 in which one piece of recent form stands out. Hansteen arrives off the back of a breakthrough win and, on the figures, sets the standard despite carrying top weight. The market has latched onto him accordingly, and it is easy enough to see why in a race where plenty have had their chances already. Saxophonic is interesting now tackling this trip again and Smoker Bellamy has a bit of substance to his all-weather profile, while Sir Mark Prescott’s Si White is the type to step forward now handicapping over middle distances. Even so, this is not a deep contest and it may simply come down to whether Hansteen can back up that latest effort under a penalty-like burden in a weak race.

Top Selections

1. Hansteen – 5/6 with Bet365

Jockey: Jason Hart | Trainer: John & Sean Quinn | Form: 68-021 | Rating: 69 | Topspeed:

Hansteen is hard to oppose. He had been edging towards a first success with that runner-up effort and then duly got the job done last time, and the form string now reads like that of a 3yo who has found his level. An official mark of 69 gives him a clear edge in this company and, crucially, there is not much lurking beneath him that screams untapped potential apart from one or two possibles. Jason Hart is a solid booking for a horse who should be ridden positively, and if he reproduces his latest run he simply ought to be too good for these. At 5/6 he is short, but still the likeliest winner. Bet type: straightforward win play.

Bet: WIN

2. Si White – 5/1 with Betfair

Jockey: Dylan Hogan | Trainer: Sir Mark Prescott Bt | Form: 696 | Rating: 63 | Topspeed: 25

Si White makes plenty of each-way appeal at the prices. The bare form does not leap off the page, but this is exactly the sort of profile you look twice at from this yard: lightly raced, gradually learning, and now moving into a low-grade handicap over a trip that should suit much better. Sir Mark Prescott runners can improve sharply once sent down this route, and a mark of 63 does not look beyond him if the stamina angle brings about the expected progress. The wide draw is not ideal, but in this company he would not need to improve much to hit the frame. Available at 5/1, he looks the value alternative to the favourite. Bet type: each-way punt.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Hansteen is the obvious win bet and the one they all have to beat in a modest race. For a bit of value, Si White appeals each-way as the likely improver now switched into a more suitable handicap scenario. Smoker Bellamy is the danger if building on his better all-weather efforts, while Saxophonic is another with place claims if seeing out the trip strongly.

20:56 – Free Bets On attheraces.com Handicap

Race Details: 4f | Class 6 | Going: Standard (Tapeta) | | flat

This is a sharp little 4f handicap rather than a deep one, and it looks to revolve around the handful arriving in form. Sparkling Wine sets the standard on recent efforts and has been knocking on the door, while My Mate Mackley and Havin A Flyer also come here after solid placed runs in similar company. That trio dominate the shortlist on what they’ve actually shown. The others need a fair chunk of improvement or a revival: Golden Harvest and Agric Ranger are lightly raced enough to do better, but neither has achieved as much as the principals, while Henriette Ronner and Jooliah have plenty to prove. In a race where early pace and track position will be crucial, proven recent sharpness could make all the difference.

Top Selections

1. Sparkling Wine – 11/4 with Paddy Power

Jockey: William Pyle | Trainer: Michael Dods | Form: -47252 | Rating: 63 | Topspeed:

Sparkling Wine is the obvious one, but sometimes the obvious one is still the right one. He’s the top-rated runner in the field and his recent form reads well for a Class 6 sprint of this nature, with two seconds in his last three starts suggesting his turn is close. This drop into a 7-runner contest over a bare 4f could suit if he breaks on terms and gets into a rhythm early. Michael Dods’ runner has been more reliable than most of these and, at 11/4, he’s hardly a gift but still looks fair in a race lacking depth beyond the main three. He holds the strongest claims.

Bet: WIN

2. Havin A Flyer – 4/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Tom Kiely Marshall | Trainer: Rebecca Menzies | Form: -84332 | Rating: 59 | Topspeed: 50

Havin A Flyer makes plenty of each-way appeal from stall 1, which could be a handy place to be in a dash like this if he’s alert from the gates. He’s been running with credit, finishing third and then second on his last two starts, and there’s a consistency about him that can’t be said for several of these rivals. He doesn’t have much in hand of the assessor, but he’s fit, in form and proven competitive at this level. At 4/1 with three places on offer, he looks the percentage play for punters who want a bit of cover, especially if the market keeps focusing on the two shorter ones.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Keep it simple in the finale. Sparkling Wine is the win play on the back of the best recent form and the highest mark in the field. Havin A Flyer is the each-way punt, with his draw and current consistency making him easy to like for a place at least. My Mate Mackley is the obvious danger after his latest second and should be on all shortlists.
