4.00 Hamilton – Maximising (1.5pt win – 100/30 Hills, 3/1 general)
Maximising, sent off at 66-1, 50-1 and 80-1in his three runs in maiden/novice company, could only finish a 13-2 fifth of seven when making his handicap debut at Southwell last December but, with the benefit of hindsight, the Tapeta surface didn’t suit – his two subsequent starts on the surface (Newcastle/Wolverhampton) produced a 100-30 fourth of 11 and an 11-4 eighth of 12. However, it’s a different story when racing on soft turf or Polytrack, with last month’s two-length Windsor success taking his score under such conditions in handicap company to 1221 (2-4), with the defeats by a neck (behind yesterday’s Ayr Silver Cup winner Goldmoyne) and half a length (behind an 82-rated Grizedale who now runs off 96 after following that win with a wide-margin Newbury victory). His debut on Lingfield’s Polytrack was achieved in a fast time for Class 5 company, and he ran close to that figure in that Class 4 at Windsor latest. With front-runners Krissy and Cadarn in opposition he should get this race run to suit (Vincenzo Peruggia could also put pace to the race) and he looks a solid bet with Billy Loughnane taking over in the saddle.
4.30 Hamilton – Empirestateofmind (1pt win – 100/30 general)
Empirestateofmind (5-1 from 8-1) did this column a favour when scoring at Ayr the other day and the John and Sean Quinn-trained veteran might prove capable of following up with underfoot conditions again in his favour. Friday’s Ayr success took his record on good to soft or softer going (time based, not the official going verdict) when returned to the track 20 days or sooner since his latest outing to 11110122033131219491 (9-20) for a profit of £29.66 to a £1 level stake at SP (+£38.97 at Betfair SP after 2% commission, expected wins = 3.39, A/E = 2.66). When returned to the track 13 days or sooner the score is 111131191 (7-9), including a three-from-three haul when returned within a week.
