17:00 – Iglu Apprentice Handicap

Race Details: 5f | Class 5 | Going: 5.6) (watering) (Good to firm (goingstick) | | flat

This is only a four-runner affair but it is not entirely straightforward, with three of them clustered tightly on official ratings and the market understandably focusing on Adalida and Ambishio. Adalida arrives in the best recent nick after a win followed by a solid second, while Ambishio has the strongest Topspeed figure in the field and could easily bounce back if getting his own way from the inside draw. London Is Blue is entitled to come on for his reappearance and represents a yard that knows the sprinting game inside out, so he cannot be dismissed lightly. Victor Cee looks the outsider on both recent form and figures. In a race lacking depth, sharpness over this bare 5f and who handles the likely strong early tempo best should decide it.

Top Selections

1. Adalida – 6/4 with Bet365

Jockey: Ethan Tindall | Trainer: Stuart Williams | Form: 547102 | Rating: 75 | Topspeed: 61

Adalida gets the nod in what looks a fairly ordinary little sprint. She is the highest-rated runner in the field off 75 and, crucially, comes here in better recent form than most after following a win with a runner-up effort. That suggests she is holding her level well, and in a race where a couple of her main rivals have questions to answer after lesser efforts, that counts for plenty. Stuart Williams’ filly does not have to improve much to take this, just repeat what she has been doing lately. At 6/4, she is hardly a hidden gem, but she still looks the most solid option in a race short on certainty. Bet: WIN

Betting Strategy

Keep it simple in this tiny field: Adalida is the win bet and the only bet. There is no each-way angle with just four runners. Ambishio is the obvious danger on raw speed figures and could make this interesting from stall 1, while London Is Blue is the one who could outrun his price if building on his reappearance.

17:35 – Aeropak Restricted Maiden Stakes (Bands B, C And D) (GBB Race)

Race Details: 7f | Class 5 | Going: 5.6) (watering) (Good to firm (goingstick) | | flat

This is only a five-runner maiden, but it is not a bad little contest for the grade. Rogue Exile and Starship Lily bring the intrigue as unexposed newcomers from yards capable of readying one first time, while Sterling Fortune and Splash set the standard on what they have already shown. Splash has the highest published rating and a bit more experience than most, though his recent efforts leave a question to answer, whereas Sterling Fortune has at least hinted there is a race in him. In a small field around Yarmouth’s turning 7f, track position and professionalism can count for plenty, so this may come down to which of the lightly raced or unraced types knows their job soonest. Tricky enough, but not impossible.

Top Selections

1. Rogue Exile – 15/8 with Sky Bet

Jockey: Harry Davies | Trainer: James Owen | Form: | Rating: | Topspeed:

Rogue Exile gets the vote in a race where the exposed form is only fair and the market is likely telling a useful story. James Owen’s 3yos have often looked well prepared, and Harry Davies is a positive booking in a race that may reward a straightforward, handy ride from stall 2. The fact he heads the betting despite taking on rivals with established ratings suggests he has shown enough at home to make plenty of appeal. In a maiden of this depth, I would rather side with the one open to any amount of improvement than rely on horses who have already had their chances. At 15/8, he looks the right one.

Bet: WIN

Betting Strategy

Keep it simple in a race of this size: Rogue Exile is the win bet and there is no each-way angle worth forcing with only five runners. Starship Lily is the obvious danger if the George Scott yard has her forward first time, while Splash has the raw figures to get involved if bouncing back, but the percentage play is to side with the likely improver.

18:10 – Otex EBF Maiden Stakes (GBB Race)

Race Details: 5f | Class 4 | Going: 5.6) (watering) (Good to firm (goingstick) | | flat

This looks a tight little 2yo maiden rather than a deep one, and the market has probably got the main players right. War Gaming sets the standard after finishing second on debut and, in a six-runner race lacking depth, that brings obvious authority. Henley On Thames has also shown useful form in better shape than most here, improving from sixth to second and posting the best Topspeed figure in the field. Horndean made the frame first time and should know more now, while Kochella gets plenty of weight but needs to bounce back from a modest latest effort. The two complete newcomers, Bolt Of Blue and the once-raced Anchiano, need a fair step forward. In truth, this looks a race the principals should dominate.

Top Selections

1. War Gaming – 11/10 with Bet365

Jockey: Oisin Murphy | Trainer: George Scott | Form: 2 | Rating: 79 | Topspeed: 44

War Gaming is the solid one. A debut second in a race like this is often the strongest piece of evidence on offer, and he already looks the most likely winner in a field where several either have plenty to prove or are starting from scratch. George Scott runs two, but this is clearly the stable first string on what we know, and the booking of Oisin Murphy only reinforces that view. He doesn’t need to improve massively to take this, though you’d expect a bit more sharpness second time over 5f. At around 11/10, he’s short enough, but still hard to oppose.

Bet: WIN

2. Henley On Thames – 11/4 with Bet365

Jockey: David Egan | Trainer: Kevin Philippart De Foy | Form: 62 | Rating: 82 | Topspeed: 67

Henley On Thames makes plenty of each-way appeal because his profile is going the right way. He stepped forward nicely from his debut sixth to finish second last time, and that Topspeed mark of 67 is the best in this line-up, which gives him a very fair chance of giving the favourite something to think about. David Egan is a good fit for this type of speedy juvenile, and Kevin Philippart De Foy’s youngsters usually know their job after a run or two. He may not have quite the upside of the favourite, but at 11/4 he looks the percentage play for those wanting a bit more value.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Keep it simple here. War Gaming is the win bet because he brings the most convincing debut form and has the strongest overall race shape in his favour. Henley On Thames is the each-way alternative at the bigger price, with his improving profile and strong Topspeed figure making him the clear value against the favourite. Horndean looks the main danger if taking a good step forward.

18:40 – 4-Head Handicap

Race Details: 7f | Class 4 | Going: 5.6) (watering) (Good to firm (goingstick) | | flat

This is a compact but quite competitive little 7f handicap, and for all there are only six runners, it is not lacking in angles. Gorgeous Mr George arrives on the back of two wins and now has to prove he can defy a mark of 86 from stall 1, while Dion Baker is the obvious thriving veteran after winning four of his last five. Sea Suite is reliable enough but didn’t build on a win last time, and the 3yos Tryst and Up The Agenda both have something to prove against older handicappers. Izzy Fast appeals as the one who could still be ahead of his mark after a solid second last time and his Topspeed figure gives him a particularly interesting look. Tricky rather than deep, but a proper betting race all the same.

Top Selections

1. Izzy Fast – 9/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Hector Crouch | Trainer: Philip McBride | Form: 5-1972 | Rating: 83 | Topspeed: 83

Izzy Fast looks the one to side with. That latest second suggested he is back in the groove, and an 83 Topspeed figure stands out in this field because it says he has already run to a level good enough to take a race like this. He doesn’t come here with the sexy profile of a horse chasing a hat-trick, but he does bring solid handicap credentials and a workable mark of 83. Hector Crouch is a positive booking for a race that could be decided by positioning and timing rather than brute force. At 9/2, he makes more appeal than a few shorter in the market and looks the value if reproducing that latest effort. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Dion Baker – 7/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Darragh Keenan | Trainer: Michael Wigham | Form: 111311 | Rating: 84 | Topspeed: 74

You can knock the level of some of those recent wins if you like, but the bare fact is Dion Baker is thriving. Four victories from his last five starts is not the profile of a horse to leave out of calculations, and he has done a good job since joining this productive spell of form. The handicapper has reacted, of course, but a mark of 84 still doesn’t look beyond him given how well he has been finishing his races. In a six-runner event where race fitness and attitude matter plenty, he brings both in abundance. The price around 7/2 is fair enough, and while he may not be thrown in, he is a solid each-way punt with only one or two to fear seriously. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Izzy Fast is the win play at the prices, with his recent second and standout Topspeed figure suggesting he can edge this if the race is run to suit. Dion Baker is the each-way option because his current strike-rate is too strong to ignore in a small but competitive field. Gorgeous Mr George is the obvious danger if the hat-trick bid survives another rise in the weights.

19:10 – Doublebase Classified Stakes

Race Details: 1m 3f | Class 6 | Going: 5.6) (watering) (Good to firm (goingstick) | | flat

This is not a deep Class 6 by any means, but it does look fairly straightforward on paper. Highland Harvey and Spaceage Love Song bring the clearest recent form, both arriving off runner-up efforts and both looking well suited by this sort of modest classified company. Spaceage Love Song has the best official mark in the field and the strongest topspeed figure, while Highland Harvey has been knocking on the door and should get a handy trip from stall 2. Of the rest, Ten Ten Twenty is respected if ready after the break, while the 3yos Cormorant Rock and Fletcher get weight from their elders and could have a say if stepping forward. Still, this looks likely to be decided by whichever of the two market principals handles the trip and quick ground best.

Top Selections

1. Spaceage Love Song – 5/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Oisin Murphy | Trainer: Michael Bell | Form: 517752 | Rating: 58 | Topspeed: 50

Spaceage Love Song makes plenty of appeal in a race where solid recent form counts for a lot. That latest second suggested he is in the right sort of race now, and his profile is just a touch stronger than Highland Harvey’s when you factor in the slightly higher rating and the best topspeed figure in the line-up. Oisin Murphy taking over is an obvious plus in a small field where positioning will matter, and Michael Bell’s runner should be able to travel comfortably before being produced late. At 5/2, he is not exactly hidden from the market, but he still looks the percentage call in a weak affair. Bet: WIN

2. Highland Harvey – 15/8 with Betfair

Jockey: Ray Dawson | Trainer: Gihan Arnolda | Form: 9-2352 | Rating: 57 | Topspeed: 47

Highland Harvey is the obvious danger and makes sense as the each-way alternative, even in a seven-runner race with only two places on offer. He has been admirably consistent in this grade, with figures of 2, 3, 5 and 2 in his last four completed starts, and there is no doubt he will give you a run for your money again. The draw in stall 2 should allow Ray Dawson to keep things uncomplicated, and if this turns into a test of resolution rather than class, he is right in the argument. The slight concern is that he has become a bit expensive to follow, so at 15/8 he is short enough, but he still holds strong place claims. Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Spaceage Love Song is the win play, simply because he brings the best blend of recent form, rating and finishing speed to an ordinary contest. Highland Harvey is the saver for each-way purposes, as he is solid and reliable at this level. If you want to look beyond the pair, Ten Ten Twenty is the one who could outrun his price after a break.

19:40 – Bazuka Handicap

Race Details: 6f | Class 6 | Going: 5.6) (watering) (Good to firm (goingstick) | | flat

This looks a modest little six-runner sprint rather than a deep Class 6, but it is still competitive enough if one of the younger legs finds a bit more. Startled Lady sets the standard on recent consistency, having kept knocking on the door, while Lieutenant Sir is the type to bounce back quickly if forgiven a poor latest effort. Dark Side Thunder is the battle-hardened older sprinter in the field and won’t be going away quietly, especially from a handy draw, but his recent profile is that of a horse who finds one or two too good. Superstorm has bits of form that keep him in the conversation too. In a race lacking depth, I’d rather side with the 3yos and trust recent upside over exposed handicap form.

Top Selections

1. Startled Lady – 2/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Neil Callan | Trainer: William Knight | Form: 4-2353 | Rating: 68 | Topspeed: 61

She makes plenty of appeal in a race where solid recent form counts for a lot. That sequence of 2s, 3s and a latest third says she is running right up to her mark, and her topspeed figure of 61 is the best on offer here. Off the same rating as Dark Side Thunder but with the 3yo weight concession firmly in her favour, she looks to have the percentages on her side. Neil Callan is a strong booking for this sort of race and William Knight’s filly doesn’t need to improve much to take this. At 2/1, she is short enough, but still the likeliest winner.

Bet: WIN

2. Lieutenant Sir – 3/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Oisin Murphy | Trainer: Archie Watson | Form: 97-310 | Rating: 66 | Topspeed: 53

He is the obvious rebound candidate if you are prepared to draw a line through that last-time-out duck egg. Prior to that, he had got his head in front and suggested he was finding his level, so there is every chance the latest run simply came too soon or the race did not pan out for him. Oisin Murphy catches the eye instantly in a six-runner handicap like this, and Archie Watson’s sprinters are never easily dismissed at this grade. He is not bombproof, clearly, but 3/1 in a thin race where only a couple have genuine upside makes him the one for an each-way punt.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Startled Lady is the sensible win play because she brings the cleanest recent profile and the best topspeed figure into an ordinary contest. Lieutenant Sir is the each-way alternative, especially if you are willing to forgive one bad run and trust the Murphy booking. Dark Side Thunder is the main danger, but he looks more exposed than the pair I want to side with.
