A busy day of racing sees action take place throughout the afternoon and evening, with a late peak during Sandown‘s card. Their evening meeting includes two Group race contests. Andrew Mount has a tip in one of those, the Brigadier Gerard Stakes, as well as three more from Yarmouth and Ripon, for your Thursday best bets.

Yarmouth Racing Tips (Thursday 28 May 2026)
Only six races take place at Yarmouth on Thursday, but Andrew has found a tip at a big price in the second contest.
2.48 Yarmouth – Dapper Guest (0.5pt e/w – 25/1 bet365)
Dapper Guest paid for sitting just behind the strong early pace in straight-mile handicap at Ascot last time and can be forgiven his 50-1 eighth-place finish. That Class 3 contest was run to suit the closers, with the first five home described by the Racing Post as “midfield”, “towards rear”, “held up in rear”, “dwelt start, in rear” and “slowly away, in rear”. The George Margarson-trained four-year-old was the first runner to reach 30mph that day and was settled in third place just behind the pacesetters Herculeus and Colombie, who dropped away to finish ninth and tenth respectively. The drop back to 7f (his three wins have come at this specialist distance) and the return to Class 4 level (he’s 0-4 at a higher level) will suit and he’s likely to be prominent in a race lacking early pace.
Ripon Racing Tips (Thursday 28 May 2026)
Ripon’s card promises some competitive afternoon action across seven races. Andrew has tips in the fifth and seventh race at the meeting.
4.10 Ripon – Night Emperor (0.5pt each-way – 8/1 bet365)
Night Emperor did well to finish sixth at Redcar last time after racing on the far side of the track when all the action was stands’ side. That was the four-year-old’s second start for Tina Jackson after leaving the care of Hugo Palmer and it was a major improvement on his stable debut at Newcastle in late February where he finished a 29-length eighth of nine. His trainer’s handicap runners (Flat turf or hurdles only) are profitable to back blind, landing 61 of their 724 starts (+£143.00 at SP, +£486.67 at Betfair SP after commission) and tend to improve with racing, so we can expect the son of Havana Grey to take another step forward this afternoon. Jo Mason, who was five from 25 on the yard’s handicappers last year (+£65.38 at SP), has only her second 2026 ride for the yard (the other finished second) and she’s on the gelding for the first time.
5.20 Ripon – Our Absent Friends (1pt win – 10/1 bet365)
In a race largely devoid of early pace it is hoped that Our Absent Friends (stall 8 of 8) blasts off against the stands’ sider rail in this 5f handicap and makes all. In-form Tristan Davidson’s eight-year-old was always on the front end when second at Newcastle on his penultimate start and his subsequent last-of-17 effort at Doncaster’s Lincoln meeting is safe to ignore as he made the running on the far side of the track from his poor low draw when all the action was down the centre (the six lowest drawn horses filled the last six places). The poorly drawn 11th Glory Hyde won next time out at odds of 9-2 while Emperor Caradoc bounced back from his badly berthed 13th place finish to record a 16-1 success at Thirsk next time. Yes I’m Mali, 14th from stall 1, was a 13-2 Thirsk winner at the next time of asking and 16th-placed Fuji Mountain (stall 5) was short-headed when 11-1 in a field of six at Pontefract next time. He could; use a drop of rain but he has a useful record here – form figures of 2215 (1-4) – and he looks set to dominate.
Sandown Racing Tips (Thursday 28 May 2026)
Sandown’s Brigadier Gerard meeting is the feature event on Thursday. In the big race itself, Andrew has a tip against hot favourite Ombudsman.
7.12 Sandown – Gethin (1pt win – 3/1 bet365, 11/4 Hills, Ladbrokes)
Ombudsman is trading at odds-on for the Group 3 Brigadier Gerard Stakes at Sandown tonight, but he has tasted defeat in both previous course outings, including when runner-up (5-4f) in this race 12 months ago. Take him on with the Owen Burrows-trained Gethin who clocked a very fast time according to Proform’s speed figures when landing a Kempton Listed race by just over three lengths on his reappearance. His trainer regards him as a future Group 1 winner and his record now reads 11221 (3-5), with the first runner-up effort by just a head. Most f his runs have taken place on slow turf but progeny of his sire, Ghaiyyath, have a superior strike-rate on time-based good or faster going and he could improve for the quicker conditions.
