Day three of York‘s Dante Festival will take place on Friday 15 May, with the Yorkshire Cup the feature race of the day. Andrew Mount focuses his attentions on the action on the Knavesmire, while he also has a sole selection at Newbury’s flat card as well today.

York Racing Tips (Friday 15 May 2026)
There’s a seven race card at York, with the action kicking off at 1.45pm. Andrew has a trio of selections, which includes a big-priced runner in the opener.
1.45 York – Ormolulu (0.5pt e/w – 18/1 generally, bet365 & Sky Bet paying six places)
Unusually for a multiple-winning filly/mare, Ormolulu struggles in races confined to her own sex, as they often feature small fields and a steady gallop, whereas she needs a strong pace to chase. Her defeat at Southwell on her penultimate start took her record in fillies/mares races to 4755263073 (0-10) whereas she’s won six of her 29 starts against the boys for a profit of £19.50 to a £1 level stake at SP. Those figures improve for six from 23 after a recent run (42 days or less) and when running in Class 4 or lower company. She’s arguably better at 6f than today’s 7f trip but she has performed with credit in her three previous runs over course and distance, including a one-length fifth of 22 off a 3lb higher mark last July. Tom Marquand is a positive jockey booking and I’m not worried about his high draw on yesterday’s evidence.
2.55 York – Regal Ulixes (1pt win – 17/2 William Hill, 8/1 888sport, 15/2 bet365)
Regal Ulixes failed to settle when only sixth at Newcastle in January on his first start since a gelding operation and first for 210 days but bounced back to land a 1m2f Class 2 handicap at Lingfield next time. Andrew Balding’s four-year-old hasn’t had the rub of the green since, being left with too much to do under a patient ride when poorly drawn over an inadequate 8.6f trip at Wolverhampton before his fourth of 14 at Newcastle when again coming from further back than ideal and not getting a clear passage. The son of Ulysses should have more to offer now returned to turf – he’s two from three on this surface since his racecourse debut with the defeat when 16-1 behind Amiloc in the Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot last summer – and P J McDonald has a good record in handicaps for the yard, scoring on 27 of his 113 mounts (23.9%) for a profit of £30.87 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected wins = 16.60, A/E = 1.63).
4.05 York – Further – 1pt win (7/1 bet365, 11/2 generally)
On the subject of Amiloc (see above), Ralph Beckett’s four-year-old heads the market for the Group 2 Yorkshire Cup, understandably so given his progressive profile and two from two seasonal debut record. However, his trainer’s seasonal; debut winners this year have tended to be fillies – seven from 17 after Maybe Not’s 18-1 win here yesterday – and the colts/geldings are just one from 16. I’d rather take a chance on Andrew Balding’s Further, who has been gelding since his respectable effort in the Melbourne Cup last autumn. Last year, his domestic runs when fresh (after a break of at least five weeks) produced form figures of 121 (2-3) with the defeat by three-quarters of a length when 20-1 for the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot.
Newbury Racing Tips (Friday 15 May 2026)
Eight races light up Newbury on Friday afternoon, but you have to wait until the 5.35pm contest for Andrew’s best bet on the card.
5.35 Newbury – Three Socks On (1pt win – 9/2 generally)
Three Socks On was a huge eyecatcher when dead-heating for first place at Chelmsford on his penultimate start as he took the ‘swamp’ route on the inside rail when it was a massive advantage to race wide. Roger Teal’s three-year-old followed that with an easy Class 6 Wolverhampton win in a very fast time for the grade and the son of Ghaiyyath could have plenty more to offer on his turf debut. His sire’s progeny have a superior strike-rate on turf as opposed to the all-weather (16.8% strike-rate compared to 13.2%) and that improves to 19.3% on time-based good or faster going.
