GG Hot List, Friday 6 November: He’s A Latchico tops the list on three signals for Fontwell

The GG Hot List checks every runner in Britain and Ireland against five signals: market support, independent naps, course form, trainer form and the jockey’s record at the course. Today’s leader is He’s A Latchico in the 14:35 at Fontwell, the only runner with three signals among six qualifiers. He is napped by Topspeed in the Racing Post and by Mirror Online, he has won three of his seven starts at Fontwell, and Jamie and Josh Moore’s stable has had 5 winners from 20 runners over the past fortnight. He has been backed from 11/1 to 15/2, which falls just short of the 30% move needed for a market signal.

How the GG Hot List works

A runner needs at least two of the five signals below, and at least one of them must be market support or naps. That way, everything on the list has attracted attention today.

  • Market: the median bookmaker price at least 30% shorter, with ten or more bookmakers cutting by 20% or more.
  • Naps: two current naps, or one from a tipster with a top-three nap record over the past 28 days.
  • Course: at least two wins at today’s course, with a strike rate of 25% or better there.
  • Trainer: 25% winners or better from at least ten runners over the previous 14 days.
  • Jockey: a strike rate of 18% or better from at least 50 rides at the course.

Runners whose price has drifted since it opened are left out. The list is ranked by number of signals, then market move, then number of naps. It contains no more than ten runners, the thresholds are not lowered on a quiet day, and non-runners are excluded before publication. Six runners qualify today, four of them at Fontwell and one each at Newcastle and Dundalk. Course and jockey records come from our database, which covers races from 1 January 2010, so they show records since then rather than full careers.

What our expert thinks

GG racing writer Billy Grimshaw picks out Carolina Jetstream, third on today’s list, as his choice:

“Carolina Jetstream is the one I want from today’s list. She’s rated 117, 3lb clear of Dancing Saxon on 114, and she has won four of her seven starts at Dundalk, so this Listed race over a mile is at a track she handles well. Her last six runs haven’t produced a win, which explains why she opened at 10/1, but the market has come for her from 10/1 to 9/2, with 21 of 23 bookmakers cutting. Even after that move, I’d rather be with the best-rated filly in the race at a track that suits her than look elsewhere in a field of 17.”

Whose NAP to trust

These are the nap tipsters with the best strike rate over the 28 days to Thursday 5 November, and their picks today:

The two best nap tipsters disagree over the 14:25 at Aintree. Royal Infantry has drifted from 11/8 to 7/4, so he misses the list, while Klimt Madrik has shortened from 5/4 to evens without reaching the 30% move needed and has no second signal. Bella Lucia has been cut from 5/1 to 4/1, which is also short of a market signal. The most-napped horses of the day are Mirabad and JPR One, with four naps each, and they meet in the Haldon Gold Cup at 15:00 Aintree. Both have drifted, Mirabad from 5/4 to 15/8 and JPR One from 11/4 to 3/1, so neither makes the list. You can see every nap in Today’s Naps Table.

Biggest backed moves this morning

The three biggest market moves of the morning all miss the Hot List because none has a second signal:

How yesterday’s Hot List did

Thursday’s Hot List had six runners. List topper Il Etait Temps was withdrawn from the Clonmel Oil Chase because of unsuitable ground, and one of the five that ran won. Dark Side Thunder (4/1) made headway from over a furlong out at Chelmsford and led inside the final furlong to win. At Clonmel, Boo Radley (11/2) was held up in last and ran on after the last to finish fourth, beaten around six and three-quarter lengths. Treasure Planet (5/2) stumbled just after two out and was seventh at Newbury, beaten around seven and a half lengths, and Quiet Soul (12/1) weakened inside the final furlong to finish seventh at Southwell, beaten around seven lengths. Gowel Road (22/1) led early but weakened two out and was ninth at Newbury, beaten around 26 lengths. A £1 win bet on each runner at starting price returned £5 from £5 staked, so the list broke even. Past performance is not a guide to future results.

Prices checked at 08:25 GMT on Friday 6 November and subject to change. Market moves use median bookmaker prices; trainer form covers 23 October to 5 November; course and jockey records cover races since 1 January 2010.
