Expert tipster Andrew Mount gives two tips for Thursday’s racing, with both selections coming in the final race on the Ripon card.

5.22 Ripon – QUERCUS (1pt E/W – 20/1 generally) + POINT OF WOODS (0.5pt E/W – 40/1 Bet365, 33/1 generally)
QUERCUS beat only a couple home when 33-1 at Thirsk last month but that was his first start since September, and he had the worst of the draw ins stall 1 of 20. Two of the horses who were drawn in the bottom half of the field to run since have mostly performed with great credit – Hurt You Never (third at 18-1) bolted up at Redcar earlier this week (5-1) and 13th-placed Golden Prosperity finished a 22-1 fourth of 11 at Beverley. This speedy front-runner has yet to win away from Catterick and perhaps doesn’t win the number of races he should but there’s compensation on the morning price. He’s drawn near the stands’ side rail and having the comfort of a rail to his immediate left should suit.
Kevin Stott has only ridden POINT OF WOODS on two previous occasions, ‘winning’ the race on the stands’ side when an 18-1 half-length second of 16 in a course and diatnce handicap in the summer of 2020 and finishing second by a head at 50-1 in a 20-runner 6f Redcar handicap last spring. The veteran wasn’t best drawn when well held at Thirsk last time in the same race as Quercus and is worth a small play at a huge price now that Stott is back on board. He’s drawn 11 of 11, well positioned to track the likely pacesetter Quercus.
