3.15 Wetherby – FRONT VIEW (1pt win – 10/1 generally)
FRONT VIEW put in a very eyecatching performance at Cheltenham on Trials Day – his first outing for Jonjo O’Neill – finishing a tenderly-handled 80-1 seventh of 15 in the 2m1f handicap hurdle that closed the card. After that race, I suggested that he could be a player in the big handicap hurdles at the spring festivals, even in the County Hurdle if he can win a race or two between now and Cheltenham in order to climb the handicap and get into that competitive contest. Surprisingly, the handicapper dropped him 2lb to a mark of 130 for that Cheltenham run and he’s now 9lb lower than when 4-1 favourite for the Martin Pipe at the 2020 festival. He only finished ninth of 23 that day but 2m5f on soft ground but too much emphasis on stamina and today’s extended 2m3f on good ground should be fine and it’s interesting to see that he’s also entered at Carlisle next Monday.
3.50 Wetherby – RETURN TICKET (1pt win – 6/1 Livescore, 11/2 generally)
RETURN TICKET has often jumped/hung to his left and is ideally served by flat left-handed tracks. Patient tactics were no help at righthanded Musselburgh last time where he could only finish a 26-length sixth of eight and his latest run over today’s course and distance resulted in a narrow success off a 6lb higher mark. His combined record over 1m7f-2m here and at Ayr reads 1P11 (3-4), with the defeat excusable as he burst a blood vessel in a Listed handicap chase.
