2.47 Nottingham – SUNLIT UPLANDS (0.5pt e/w – 25/1 bet365, 22/1 generally)

ICE MAX is the obvious one in the Listed Ben Marshall Stakes, having taken his record in April/October to four wins from seven starts when landing a 17-runner handicap at York last time. However, he has only scored once from nine starts in Listed/Group company and the 11-8 looks on the skinny side. With PRAGUE out of sorts this season and TREBLE TEE needing to prove his effectiveness on soft ground there could be value among those at bigger prices. SUNLIT UPLANDS, one of only a handful still trained by Rae Guest, returned from wind surgery to win well over 7f on soft ground at Sandown last month and her subsequent Saint Cloud Listed seventh of 13 was a respectable effort, as the officially soft going was much faster than advertised. She’s never finished outside of the first two in her five domestic starts and can be supported each-way to small stakes.

2.53 Newton Abbot – KING OF THE LAKE (1pt win – 5/2 bet365, William Hill, 888sport, 9/4 generally)

KING OF THE LAKE won three handicap hurdles from three starts after returning from a wind operation last February, romping home by 26 lengths at Wincanton (2m5.5f), scoring eased down by ten lengths at Newbury (2m4f) and beating Manuelito by two and a half lengths in a fast time at Exeter despite doubts about the cut back to 2m. The form of his latest success worked out well, with the runner-up now rated 11lb higher after winning two of his three subsequent starts. Valadon, the 22-length fourth, was a winner next time, while 28-length fifth Teorie only went down by a head on his next outing. I fear JJ MOON given Emma Lavelle’s fine record with handicap hurdle debutants (recent Cheltenham scorer Ma Shantou was a qualifier on this angle), though he needs to improve on the clock.

7.00 Kempton – STANLEY SPENCER (1pt win – 5/1 generally)

STANLEY SPENCER won this 6f London Sprint Series Qualifier last year and James Tate’s four-year-old can be backed to stage a repeat. The gelding was a winner over this trip at Southwell on his penultimate start and it’s safe to draw a line through his subsequent tenth of 11 over the 7f trip at Kempton as he was caught wide under a 5lb claimer despite starting from a useful draw in stall 6. Arctic Dawn, also trapped wide when fifth in that race, won at the next time of asking and Stanley Spencer’s 6f Kempton form bears close inspection. His three course and distance runs have produced form figures of 611 (2-3), with the defeat at 33-1 in a race fought out by Drama and City House, rated 78 and 85 respectively at the time but now on 95 and 100. His stalking style will be an asset in a race likely to be run at a strong gallop.
