A top class field will assemble at the 1m start at Newbury at 2.35pm on Saturday 16 May. The 2026 BOYLE Sports Lockinge Stakes has attracted a stellar list of 10 runners for the Group 1 showpiece, which is always one of the highlights of the entire Flat season.
Steve Chambers previews the iconic race, which has been won by some of the best milers in history, and he takes a look at the latest odds and betting, along with the trends, as well as giving his 1-2-3 for the race.

John & Thady Gosden have a phenomenal recent record in the race having saddled three of the last five winners of the Lockinge Stakes. The Clarehaven duo will have a big chance of claiming glory once again with Damysus, who sits towards the head of the betting. A stunning three-and-three-quarter length winner of the Earl Of Sefton Stakes at Newmarket on his comeback run, the Frankel colt will now look to build on that Group 3 success.
Third behind the classy duo of Opera Ballo and Field Of Gold in the bet365 Mile, Zeus Olympios will be looking to improve on that effort for Karl Burke. Astonishingly, Aidan O’Brien has only won this race twice, but in The Lion In Winter he has a really smart contender. Disappointing last season, the Ballydoyle raider showed his class last time out when winning at Leopardstown and could be in the shake-up, if replicating that run.
Notable Speech has multiple Group 1 wins to his name and arguably has the best form on show here. Charlie Appleby’s raider was last seen finishing fourth in a Keeneland contest, but is one that could enjoy a return to British shores. However, the stable have been struggling of late, so could just find a couple too good.
More Thunder has rocketed up the pecking order in the last 12 months and the William Haggas-trained five-year-old will try a mile for the first time. At his best over seven furlongs, he’s a horse that has to be respected, but may just struggle to storm home over a mile. Sahlan, Jonquil and Dancing Gemini are another trio that add more depth to the race.

2026 BOYLE Sports Lockinge Stakes Tips
John & Thady Gosden’s recent record in this contest is exemplary and they can reign once again with Damysus, who can bound to victory. He showed a glorious turn of foot over nine furlongs last time out in the Earl Of Sefton, and a repeat of that effort here should be enough to land the prize. Notable Speech is a classy performer on his day and should have enough class to chase home Damysus, with More Thunder completing the placings.
